If you're looking for a decent, very cheap guitar (usually about $79, sometimes as low as $49), I'd recommend this one. I've had one and liked it. A band mate still plays his. It's amazing for the price. The quality seems consistently good. It's a large guitar and, like most cheap guitars, is loud in the bass range and weaker in the treble. It'd be a great guitar for a student.
Even more impressive is this super cheap combo deal (usually about $99) for a mandolin and the same guitar as above. The mandolin required some setup to play well, but the guitar played well out of the box.
