Watch out for yet another anti-Spanish film coming out of Hollywood. I just saw a short clip on Jay Leno yesterday, but let me say that is was enough to piss me off.

Again, it's that ugly and mean English queen Elizabeth I who's portrayed as some sort of heroine and again, as always, it's the Spaniards who are portrayed as a threatening, incompetent gang of louts. In the scene I saw, Elizabeth, gorgeously dressed (although it's a fact that she only had one dress all her life) confronts alone a group of ugly, swarthy, hairy and bearded Spaniards, dressed all in black, who have come to threaten her with the Armada. Oh well, since Hollywood doesn't dare offend Germans, Russians and Arabs anymore, they have to look for another whipping boy, I guess.
Not that it really matters, but Spaniards living in the US are pretty much fed up with this stereotype.

That film has been very heavily advertised on television here in recent days.

As for me, swarthy - no. Hairy - take a good look at the top of my head in the photo, although I do wear a beard (rather Sanata Claus like, actually). Ugly, I'll let others decide.

Bob, I probably wasn't clear enough: they looked more like Al Qaeda dudes in Renaissance outfits, if you know what I mean. (The mean lion in The Lion King also looked Arabic) Laughing Laughing

As to the title itself, the "Golden Age", why that is linguistic piracy! That era was "El Siglo de Oro" in Spain, the days of Cervantes, Quevedo and Góngora, of Emperor Philip II. There was no such thing as a Golden Age under Elizabeth I, her courtiers were mostly pirates and waylayers, with some exceptions.

Boy, am I patriotic today (God forbid) - must be because tomorrow, October 12th is Spain's national holiday, El día de la hispanidad, Nuestra Señora del Pilar or whatever and there's always this glorious military parade in Madrid! Laughing Laughing Let's see if the mob ends up booing the King and the Government again this year...
