Debut of the 1940 U.S. Census

Hello Everyone,

I do not know if the scheduled release of the 1940 U.S. Census holds any significant interest to the Asturian community seeking to find their Asturian / Spanish family members.

The National Archives plans to release the census on April 1, 2012, and I understand that it will be in digital format rather than on microfilm. It has been a long wait on publication.

Certainly, the large, online genealogy companies will be first in line. Unfortunately, it will not be free. Hopefully, the genealogy sections in most public libraries will receive a copy and we will have access to this important data base. While my home county library does not have Ancestry. com, a nearby county library has the site on a genealogy computer and usage is based on a first come, first served basis.

For me, the 1920 and 1930 Censuses have been productive in my search for my paternal Asturian and maternal Slovakian family members; although, I first had to sort through various name changes and spelling errors.

The copy of the1920 Census was not legible, and I had to have the West Virginia History Archives decipher the handwriting.

Thanks for letting me know. I appreciate knowing that I am not the only one who has that heritage combination. My grandparents came from the Austrian Hungarian Empire, Sucha, Czechslovakia. My grandfather came first and worked as a coal miner in Pennslyvania two years before bringing Grandmother and one child to this country,and they settled in West Virginia and also lived in Ohio. He was last a blacksmith that made steel working tools for the Weirton, West Virginia steel mills.

They were members of the Russian Ordodox Church and had eleven children. My mother was number five. It was difficult to trace their last names because of four name changes and it was a county clerk that gave me the family name that appears on the early documents. Without that lucky break, I may have never known.

I have many Slovakian cousins and very few on our Spanish side living in the US.

I am grateful for this forum where we can share our family history, immigration stories , and make new friends.

Check to see if your library has Heritage Quest. Mine includes it in the programs we can access at home and the Census records are provided at no cost..

I look forward to the 1940 release. I'd be happy to help you.

Thank you for your reply and I will check the public library for a copy of Heritage Quest. I do know that they have Ancestry.com. Unfortunately, my computer package did not come with that software. It would be nice to access it at home rather than traveling twenty miles down the road to another county, because our county library does not have anything as of yet. I am also looking forward to the 1940 release in 2012. Thank you for your kind offer to help me.

So, does Spain conduct any type of Census? If so, how does one go about obtaining a copy?

Dear Yapper,

That is a very good question, and I personally do not know the answer about Spanish Census records. You might try emailing one of the forum administrators. There is a listing for the registration of births for each el consejo in Spain, (county seat).

I have a copy of my father's for the El Consejo de Grado. I also have a copy of his Catholic Church Baptismal certificate. These records do not record his siblings; however, I found the names of my great grandparents and their places of birth.

Somewhere in the twenty thousand or so forum postings, someone has listed all the mailing information for each Ministerio de Justicia Registro Civil. I have forgotten where to find this information. The MJRC may keep other records than just birth certificates.
