Degrees of cousinhood are determined by the number of generations in common since the common ancestors. In English, the children of sibs are cousins or first cousins (two generations have passed since their common grandparents). The children of first cousins are second cousins to each other (three generations have passed since their common great grandparents). The grandchildren of first cousins are third cousins to each other, etc. My first cousin's child is my first cousin once removed. My first cousin's grandchild is my first cousin twice removed, etc. Degrees of removal refer to extra generations that exist on only one side of the pedigree.

My great uncle (or aunt) is my grandparent's brother or sister. Why there are no grand uncles or grand aunts, as there are grandfathers and grandmothers, is a mystery to me.

If anyone know the castellano or asturianu terms for the above cousin relationships, I would very much appreciate their posting them to this forum.

Hi Bob,

I can help you out with the castellano translations.

First Cousin - primo(a) hermano(a)
Second Cousin - primo(a) segundo(a)
Third Cousin - primo(a) tercero(a)...and so on
Great Uncle - Tio Abuelo (makes more sense than in English)
Great Aunt - Tia Abuela

Don't know of any castellano translations for degrees of removal.

Robert
