Las Chavalas?

Does anyone know of a town or village called Las Chavalas? This is listed as the birthplace of my grandmother in the 1890's. It should be close to Oviedo or Aviles. My father, aunt and I are traveling to Asturias in August and would like to visit this place. We cannot find a reference to it on any map. Thanks.

Hi, Marleen, welcome back!

In my 1977 Atlas de Asturias, there's a small village called La Chavola to the north and east of Oviedo.

This book doesn't have every village, possibly because some of them were already gone by the time these maps were drawn. For example, Avilés' La Magdalena doesn't appear in the book.

En mi Atlas de Asturias de 1977, hay un pueblito called La Chavola al norte y este de Oviedo.

Este libro no tiene todos los pueblos, posiblemente porque para entonces se dibujaron estas mapas, algunos ya había desaparecido. Por ejemplo, La Magdalena de Avilés no aparece en el libro.

Marleen, I believe you mean "Las Chavolas" in the county of Castrillón, near Avilés.

LAS CHAVOLAS

Las Chavolas es un pueblo enorme en extensión, sus habitantes, viven en casas aisladas, en fincas generalmente bastante grandes.

Esta situado en un alto al N. del concejo de Castrillón, de hecho, la zona de Las Arribas, es un acantilado sobre el Mar Cantábrico, al Norte y al Este está Arnao, al Oeste Santa Maria del Mar y al sur Arancés y La Envidia.

Espero que funcione este enlace que te pongo, si es asi, podrás ver un mapa bastante bueno y detallado de toda la zona.

Si no funciona, me lo dices y buscaré la forma de pegarlo como imagen en el foro.

LAS CHAVOLAS

Las Chavolas is a village that covers a large area. It's residents live in isolated homes and each generally has a pretty large plot of land.

It's situated on a high spot in the north of the "county" [concejo] of Castrillón, in fact, in the area of Las Arribas. It's on a cliff over the Cantabrian Sea, to the north and east is Arnao, to the west is Santa Maria del Mar y to the south Arancés and La Envidia.

I hope that this link I'm adding works, if it does you'll be able to see a very nice map which details the entire region.

If it doesn't work, tell me and I'll find another way to add the map to the forum as an image.

Pues, Las Chavolas está sóla un poco al oeste de Arnao.

¿Cómo se puede pedir otras mapas de esta fuente? Son mucho más detalladas que las mías.

So, Las Chavolas is just a tad to the west of Arnao.

How can one get other maps from that source? They're much more detailed than mine.

1º.- http://sigpac.mapa.es/fega/visor/

2º.- Acercarse con el zoom al tipo de mapa que quieras visualizar, y al área que quieras ver, en este caso, a un área de 1.552 Ha., a 770 m. (en la siguiente escala, lo que ves ya son fotografias aéreas de la zona)

3º.- Pulsar la opción "Imprimir"

4º.- Ya tienes tu mapa detallado, en formato Adobe, ampliable, imprimible...lo que quieras.

Por cierto, Las Chabolas está al norte y al oeste de Arnao, pero solo "visto desde arriba" Wink

, en realidad, esta "por encima".

Desde cualquier punto de Arnao, para llegar a Las Chabolas es necesario salvar un desnivel importante, en esta foto que colgaste recientemente de la playa de Salinas se aprecia muy bien el pueblo:

Las Chabolas es toda la franja superior de la foto, a la izquierda el núcleo mas importante de población y hacia la derecha, hasta el mar "por encima" de Arnao y de La Mina, todo eso es "Las Chabolas".

En la misma foto, en primer término, "por encima" de la playa de Salinas, esa zona se llama "Pinos Altos", pertenece a San Martin de Laspra, alli es desde donde los abuelos de Bob y de Caroll veian el mar cuando llevaban las vacas a pacer.

Yes, a very nice photo. The birthplaces of my grandparents are just off to the left, my grandfather near the beach and my grandmother in La Vallina at the top of the cliff but just out of view.
