fesoria: pronounced feh-SOH-ree-ah. A hoe or long-handled implement with a thin, flat blade used to break up the surface of the ground and loosen the dirt.
The fesoria is used in Asturias as a gardening tool for small patches of land (llosa or l.lousa is the word for garden). The flat blade of iron or steel is attached to the wooden handle through an eye or tang (gueyu, in Asturian).
Word variants in West Asturias include: fisoria, fisoira, fosoira. In East Asturias: h.esoria, h.osoria. The word is derived from Latin: fossorium. By extension, a fesoriada or fesoriazu is something that has been hacked away crudely with a hoe-like implement.
Usage examples:
A ver si m’afaigo con esa fesoria. [Let’s see if I can get accustomed to that hoe.]
Esmangou la fesoria ya nun yara a trabal.lar. [He broke the handle of the hoe and was unable to work.]
Ia una fesoria mui alcontradiza pa binar el maiz. [It’s a very convenient hoe for breaking up the corn.]
Folk wisdom:
Con papes y boroña faise andar la fesoria. [Potatoes and cornbread are the fuel for the hoe.]
El qu’antes de morrer da lo que tien, si-y dan cola fesoria merezlo bien. [If a dying person is given what he/she deserves, if they hit them with a hoe it’s because they deserve it.]

Si, pues a ver si m'echas un gabitu pa cona cesoria xunto tua casa. Ta'l prau mui mol.lau ya sal muita augua de la qu'escarabico. Vou entamar a cavar una l.louria pa tresplantar las berenxenas turcas, si ia que son quien a salir aiqui n'Asturias. |
