Me acabo de enterar de que voy a ejercer la docencia este nuevo curso en Somiedo/ Somiéu: ¿algún somedano por este foro? La verdad que me han dicho que es un sitio muy acogedor, pero sé poco más  , un poco de información no me vendría mal, ¡¡¡muchas gracias!!!

Lo primero, no es Somiéu, sinó Somiedu 
Somiéu es como dice la gente de Teverga y otros municipios vecinos, pero los somedanos dicen Somiedu. |

Dígame el nombre y apellidos de su bisabuelo así como de los familiares que éste dejó en Pola de Somiedo: esto es muy pequeño con lo que las posibilidades de encontrar algún familiar son altas, incluso en el caso de que se hayan trasladado a otras ciudades como Oviedo o Gijón, ya que aún en estos casos se sigue manteniendo el contacto con la gente de Pola. La información la puede postear en este hilo o me la puede enviar por privado, como usted prefiera.

Tell me the personal data of your great grandfather as well as that of his relatives in Pola de Somiedo: this place is so little that the possibilities of finding any living relative are really high, even if they have moved to other cities like Oviedo or Gijón; even in those situations people keep in touch with their former neighbours. You may post the requested information on this thread or send it to me as a private message, it's up to you.

¡Nomenón! La Academia recoge Somiedu también en el libro de Nomes de conceyos, parroquies, pueblos y llugares del Principáu d'Asturies. En una nota al pié explican que en Babia se dice también Somiéu, pero en cualquier caso la forma autóctona y por tanto la que se debe usar es la otra: Somiedu.
Esto es porque en occidente se conserva la -d- en las terminaciones -iedu: Somiedu, miedu, Ouviedu,... mientras que en las variedades de asturiano centro-orientales tiende a caer: Somiéu, mieo/mieu, Uvieo/Uviéu,...
En cualquier caso no tiene mayor importancia, solo es un detalle. |

And it's been raining incoherently in Manama. At least you can't attribute the snow in Somiedu to climate change. There used to be big-time snowstorms there in the old days...

Ya en Manama nun fai mas que chover. Pulo menos la nieve en Somiedu nun ia pol cambeo climatico porque vei tiempu caian bonas nevadonas n'Asturias...

Yeap, you're definitively right Is, snow storms like this current one ought to be expected in Somiéu due to its inner physical characteristics. By the way, what the hell are you doing in Bahrain??? That's definitively a weird place to stay in  . Cheers!!!

Isn't Bahrain normally serious desert? I suppose global climate change could be advantageous for some places.

Actually, I heard the same explanation for the island kingdom's name (Bah rain) in an expat newspaper in Manama. But given it was raining there every day two weeks ago (and serious rain) it did make a bit of sense, were it not so ridiculous as an explanation.
Bahrein in Arabic means 'Two Seas' (Bahr=sea) '-ein' (ending for two in Arabic). The word comes from the fact that fresh water sprung from the ocean floor around the island. Divers would swim down with ceramic jars and fill them up with freshwater. These springs, mostly in the northern half of the island, were also found on the island itself. Mesopotamian chronicles about a place called Dilmun are thought to refer to Bahrain.
The amount of rainfall that has been falling there is thought to be freakish. Yes, it's technically extreme desert conditions. But climate change seems to be taking it more in a tropical direction, if the rain continues.
Sad-Aspie--I was there on a work assignment, but just got into Asturias, where it's freezing cold. You ought to take pics of Pola de Somiedu for us! |

Hi Is,
First of all, I would like to apologise for the delay, I've been really busy these days... loads, loads, and loads of work...
Sure I will post pics of Somiedo!!! I'm taking pictures of some beautiful teitos at the moment, so I guess I'll post a mixture of both views of Somiedo and awesome teitos I've come across.
Just to finish, I would like to warn anyone who might have in mind visiting Somiedo: if your Spanish is a bit rusty, make sure you take some lessons before you set your foot in Somiedo. Although people here is warm and easy going, their English is not precisely fluent... I'm having a really, really, really hard time trying to make these children speak something loosely similar to British English, and my own level of English is steadily deteriorating in the process, which is really sad. Anyway, nobody told me it was going to be easy, I guess... |
