I'm looking for any information on my great great grandparents who lived in Spain I believe in Pravia, Oviedo. Their son Benito Perez y Menendez sailed from Oviedo to Havana, Cuba and then to Tampa, Florida on the Mascotte in 1899. On the passenger list he cites his birth being in Oviedo, and I know from family members that we originated from Austurias and Andalucia. The only information I have is on their son who was born Nov 19, 1875 in Pravia then traveled to the US in 1899 and eventually died in Tampa, Florida in 1929. I'm guessing his parents were born around 1850 +/- 5 years, but I don't even have their first names. It would help if I could find a birth certificate or something from Spain which lists his parents names. I'd appreciate any help you could give me!

The Registro Civil began in 1871 and list births, death, parents, etc. You can request copies of the records. Start with the Registro Civil for Pravia: Juzgado 1ª Instancia e Instrucción Nº 1 (Plaza Marqués Casa Valdés, s/n), Pravia, Asturias, Espana.

Welcome, MA!

There are several sticky threads at the top of the genealogy section you should read. This one, for example, will explain what "Oviedo" means:

I am also trying to find information on my ancestors that came from Pravia, Asturias. They were born in a small caserio called Villagonzay. Most of my aunts and uncles traveled to Cuba in the 1900s. My maternal grandfather's name was Segundo Perez Fernandez and my maternal grandmother's name was Generosa Suarez Menendez. On my father's side, my grandfather's name was Andres Menendez ? and Concepcion Fernandez?. They were both from another caserio called Figares, near Salas.

Can you tell me how long it will take to get the information from the Registro Civil and how much do they charge?
