Breizh Touch Parade (Paris, Sept. 2007)

Post by is »

The Festival Interceltique de Lorient, whose new director is the Asturian doctor and ethnomusicologist Lisardo Lombardia, organized a bagpiping and biniou march down the Champs Elysees in Paris this past weekend.

My sister's boyfriend, Xavier Guiavarc'h (who is a Breton from Roscoff) took the pictures in the album below, including an Asturian and Galician piper's band. Anybody know who they were?

Thanks, Art. It was fun listening to TFI on the Asturian bagpipers' band. The TV host confuses them with the Galicians for a moment there, then rectifies. I think I recognized Bras Rodrigo among the pipers, so I'm guessing the u-tube clip is of the Banda Gaites Corvera d'Asturies, acuei?

Here's another u-tube clip of Breizh Touch, but all-Breton: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuL0u0IEtZQ

Gracies, Art.

Thanks, Paul, for that link to the Breton video. Wow, they've got some huge bagads!

I love their music, especially the call and response technique they use with the bombardes. I hear that they do that because it's too hard to play a bombarde continuously. It requires a lot of air pressure.

You're right! I hadn't noticed, but that was Blas Rodrigo who appears at about second 0:59 in the film. It looks like the musicians are wearing costumes based on different patterns, so maybe all four bands combined into one for this event.

Their costumes are beautiful, aren't they?

One day maybe we'll be in the procession tooting with them!
