Guidelines for Translators
[revised by Art 11/28/07]

Purpose and Guiding Principle
1. The forum will be successful only if it has active members. For this reason, our foremost guiding principle is to make visitors feel welcome and appreciated.

2. The purpose of the translations is to make the forum accessible to mono-lingual participants. It's okay if the translations are a little rough, as long as they are easily understandable. When you translate, strive first for clarity, even if structure and punctuation have to be altered.

Methods
3. Translators can either use machine translators, such as Google or do the translations themselves. Obviously, machine translations do not produce native language, so the translator will have to correct its errors.
Google, English to Castilian: http://translate.google.com/translate_t?langpair=en|es
Google, Castilian to English: http://translate.google.com/translate_t?langpair=es|en

4. Translations should be added at the bottom of the same message. There should be a line separating the translation from the original and a notice about who did the translation, something like this:
--------------------
trans. Art

or

--------------------
Translated by Angelina
5. Translations should reflect the intentions and interests of the writer. Please do not comment on the message in your translation. If you want to comment on a message, reply with a new message.

6. Translators should generally not change the writer's original message. If the translator thinks the writer has made an error in their original message, please contact the writer to discuss the issue. Or the translator can mention the possible problem in a reply to the original message.

7. Of course, every rule has exceptions. Please maintain--or add to the original--space between paragraphs so they are easier to read. Similarly, to help others read a message, you can correct an original text written in all lower case or all upper case letters and add missing punctuation, accents, or spaces between words.

8. If you add translator's comments, either to clarify the meaning of a word or phrase or to help the reader understand an idea that might be lost in translation, insert the comment in square brackets with your name:
[Your name: Your translator's comment]. Longer comments should usually be made in a separate reply.

9. In the case of recipes, a translations should adhere to the measurement units of the original. Post a reply (a new message in same topic) if you want to convert the recipe into the measurement units of the language into which a recipe is being translated, or if you want to add directions and information that might be needed to successfully use the recipe.

10. If it is at all possible, add a translation of the author's subject to the subject line. If the author's subject is not descriptive, or it is too long, you may change their subject. Yes, this is an exception to the rule about not changing the author's original words. We decided to do this because subject lines need to describe the message well. Viewers usually decide whether to read a message only having seen the subject.

11. If you use machine translation, you may have to correct the corrupted links, remove the extra spaces around quotes, bbcode, etc.

12. When you're done, please test each link you've included in the translation.

Problems
13. In general, translators should not change any translations made by the author of the original message unless the author asks for help. If the author's translation distorts the meaning or is unintelligible, please contact the original author and offer to tweak the translation for the author. If that doesn't work, you can add your comments in a reply to the original.

14. If the writer has included a phone number or email address, please contact one of the moderators or the administrator (Art) so we can record this information and remove it from the message. Posting an email address will probably result in receiving SPAM.

15. Translators should never delete or move any messages. If you think a message is destructive, insulting, placed in the wrong section of the forum, or totally inappropriate for the forum, please contact one of the moderators or the administrator (Art).

16. If you see evidence of harassment, hackers, or other troublemakers, please contact the administrator (Art).

Conclusion
17. Any time you have a question or comment you think might help other translators, please add a message to the section of the forum for translators: http://www.asturianus.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=42.

18. You are an important part of this online community! Thank you for helping make the site accessible to our monolingual Spanish-speaking and English-speaking visitors.

Líneas maestras para traductores
[revisado por Art 28/11/07]

Propósito y Principios

http://www.asturianus.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=42.

Hi, Maria,

That'd be great!

That topic has a list of possible areas to help with. If you respond to that thread or email me, I'll add you to the list and get you set up.
