ASTURIES IS NOT SPAIN

Post by asturies_diz »

Yes, I realize that if you take a look at the above title, the sentence may sound harsh. But the truth is that the situation in Asturias is quite dire.

I don’t know what your perception is from America. It’s probably not easy to follow the political news from there. But again, it’s not a pretty scene over here. Let me mention a few points:

Neither the PSOE [Socialist] nor the PP [conservative] is doing anything to make Asturias prosper. You probably haven’t heard about a project for a dam that our own Tini Areces [Vicente A. Areces] has planned. The dam would destroy what is officially designated as a state park. The excuse is that we need to ensure the regional water supply. The truth behind it is that Areces is pushing the project to ensure that water reaches the golf courses that his contractor friends want to build along the coast. The developers have already destroyed the Mediterranean coastline and have run out of space. Now they’ve turned their eyes on our coastline to destroy it too.

In terms of cultural policy, neither the PP nor the PSOE is doing anything constructive. They all trumpet their support for the Asturian language, but neither party does anything to safeguard it by giving it a legal framework. Moreover, neither party would really care if it disappeared altogether. Basic civil rights enshrined in the UN Charter, the EU institutions and even the Spanish Constitution are being violated. They are denying us a civil right that other autonomous communities in Spain with local languages already enjoy. They respect language rights everywhere except in Asturias—are we somehow less entitled to them?

The truth is that people here are increasingly anti-Spanish and anti-PP/PSOE. More people are starting to appreciate our traditional culture. Partly, the reason is that people have begun to notice the attacks against Asturian culture by both of the mainstream political parties. At the same time, our ‘beloved’ president takes off to North and South America on taxpayer money assuring émigrés that he is helping make Asturias grow, that he is doing a lot to promote Asturian culture and that he himself feels very Asturian. Instead, you should take a look at what his real policies are.

Is this a partisan message? I won’t ask you to vote for any specific political party as long as it’s Asturian. The mainstream Spanish parties only strive to stamp out our culture. It’s time for us to defend our own beliefs and for us to be proud to be Asturian. We want to protect our culture because we are no less than Catalans, Basques, Galicians, or any less than the people of Valencia or Majorca.

My advice…www.unida.es

These lines were written in the wee hours of the morning, but you should follow your conscience and vote as you see fit. I hope at least to have awakened an interest in everything that is happening here. These are only two examples, there are many others. I can keep you posted if you express interest.

First off, I think I understand where Asturies_Diz is coming from, even though I think the poll question [‘Asturias is not Spain’] is out of context here. Perhaps the poll should ask whether the mainstream parties in Asturias pursue the interests of the Principality. In such a poll, it would be clear to me that neither the PSOE (especially its Asturian version, the FSA) nor the PP further any Asturian interests in any meaningful way. For nearly 30 years of near-uninterrupted Socialist rule, Asturias has been an inert, passive and changeless society. Borrowing from microeconomics, the utility function of its voters at the poll is not being met.

The PSOE/FSA formula has been to follow a statist model which can be good for large-scale projects, but fails at more complex tasks such as fostering SMEs [small and medium enterprises] or creating comparative advantages in the high-tech sector. Instead, the local administration accounts for almost 20% of Asturian GDP in an autonomous community that has a perpetual budget deficit. To satisfy demand for jobs, the PSOE/FSA has resorted to non-transparent political appointments, influence peddling, under-the-counter deals and preferred lists. If you spent a year working in Asturias, you would know immediately how the system operates and seeks self-perpetuation.

Like in any rationing mechanism, the more the PSOE/FSA attacks the culture of its own constituents, the more backlash they will get from people like Asturies_Diz. Eventually, I think, bigoted statements from people like Javier Fernandez (the head of the FSA) are going to backfire. If the PP takes up on these cues, like seems to be the case with Gabino de Lorenzo’s [PP mayor of Uvieu/Oviedo] latest statements in favor of giving Asturian a legal framework, the utility function may be met more efficiently. That is, if the ‘pleasure’ a voter gets abstractly at a polling station can be compared to a ‘good’ that one buys at a certain ‘equilibrium price’ in the market.

One implication of Areces and his crew’s attacks against identity politics in Asturias is that they consider local culture archaic, rural and worthless. Fernandez has dubbed his party ‘cosmopolitan’ in a recent speech when arguing against making Asturian and Galician official languages. The implication was that those who fight for a basic civil right like language recognition are somehow tribal.

Eli, you have to realize that ‘patriotism’ in Spain is a loaded word, just as it is loaded to raise a Spanish flag on your balcony. It is not done, especially in what are known as the ‘peripheral nationalities’ like Asturias, because of the long memories of the Civil War and the 40-year fascist dictatorship. My Russian friends in Moscow also used the word ‘patriot’ in ways that made me uncomfortable. It does not translate gracefully.

------

Elí, I essentially agree with you and Asturies_Diz might, too. I think you're considering the ideal. Asturies_Diz is thinking in terms of practical politics.

Is is right that it would be better to word the poll question differently.

As I understand Asturies_Diz, he is saying that Asturian culture (it's language and traditions) and even its landscape are being destroyed. The two larger parties (PP & PSOE) are nationwide and seem to follow party lines set in Madrid, so Asturian needs are not being met.

I suspect that many Asturians would say that Asturias has been left behind by the economic progress that Spain has seen in the last decades. Unemployment and underemployment are high and many people are existing only because of government welfare payments.

Also, while other regions of Spain have benefited from governmental support for preservation of their distinctive cultures, Asturias has not. For example, the public schools still teach that Asturianu is simply a dialect of Castilian. Children still learn that Asturianu is something that only country bumpkins speak. They learn that it's not a serious language.

It's in that context, that some Asturians are have come to believe that they won't get the support they need from the two national parties, and that they should support regional parties instead.

The people I spoke with made a clear distinction between Asturian nationalism (a desire to become a separate nation from Spain) and Asturian cultural preservation. I don't think many support nationalism in the sense of separatism. But I did meet many who want the government to respect Asturian culture. This is a different kind of nationalism that is based on respect for the local culture.

I suspect that Asturies_Diz is hoping that the Asturian-Americans will help vote PSOE and PP out of office. Many Asturians living overseas can still vote. In fact, a huge percentage of the registered voters of Asturias live outside of Asturias and even outside of Spain. The story our grandparents lived is being relived today. Unlike the Asturian emigrants in many Latin American countries, it is not likely that many Asturian-Americans are able to vote in Spanish elections.

Perhaps Asturies_Diz has just made his variation on the "Ain't I a woman?" speech. (A speech by the Black-American abolitionist, Sojourner Truth, at a women's rights convention in Akron, Ohio, in 1851.

For what it's worth...
I like Irish music, which is good because it's the main kind of Celtic music we can participate in here in the US. But when I listen to an Asturian CD, I'm often surprised by how different the patterns are from Irish music.

I worry that with all the interest in Scottish and Irish music, the Asturian will be lost.

-----------------------

No me digas!

Terechu, would you be willing to accept the idea that Asturias has or once had a Celtic heritage (even if most of the elements are now lost)? Or the idea that culturally Asturias has a lot in common with the other Celtic cultures?

I see a negative in adopting elements from the other Celtic cultures, but I also see strong parallels in the mythology and elements of the cultural "personality." So for me it's not either/or (black and white, or oppositional).

I recognize that Asturies_Diz has taken an extreme position that would be hard to defend. Given my own history, I have to be willing to entertain a little youthful exuberance. I makes me happy to see it. It also makes me feel old!

Nope! I know nothing about genetics, but the Celts never set foot in Asturias (nor in Ireland for that matter). It's becoming imperative that we find a proper name for the Atlantic peoples of Europe - I recently read a post by some crazed Asturian skinhead, who claimed we were "kelto-germanic" because of the prevalence of Haplotype R1b and so on. As far as I am concerned, Asturias was settled some 30.000 years ago, and most of us carry the genes of that early population (including the Basques). Whoever arrived afterwards, Romans, Suevians, Alans, Vandals and West Goths are just that: late arrivals.
By the way, why doesn't anybody claim to be an Alan? Because being Persian is uncool?

No, Art.
