Subsidies from the Asturian Government

Post by Carlos »

The Official Bulletin of the Principality of Asturias (BOPA) publish a resolution about the annual subsidies that the Asturian Government grants to Spain's and Foreign Asturian Societies.

The total amount of the money destined to subsidy for example Cultural Activities is 939450 €, or 1315000 $. With it, Asturian Societies can obtain musical instruments as bagpipes or drums, traditional dresses, or organise other cultural activities related to Asturies.

What are you waiting for create an Asturian Society in the US, for example in West Virginia or another place?

We have, in fact, considered that option. Many times. Sometimes we think about making AsturianUS.org into a Centro Asturiano.

If we had to have a physical presence with a building and activities, that would be very expensive and a heck of a lot of work. But the fact is that we wouldn't be able to use a building. We don't live close enough to each other to make a Centro Asturiano part of our social life. We are spread out over a very large area. I don't even see my cousins very often. We can't visit each other without flying or making long drives. That's why we created this internet-based Centro Asturiano, AsturianUS.org.

Either way (an online Centro or a building-based Centro) an American Asturian Society for all of the US would be different from any existing Centro Asturiano (at least as far as I know). So it would require flexibility and creative thinking on the part of both Asturian-Americans and the Asturian government.

It's also a matter of priorities. At this point most of us have specialized interests. The Banda de Gaites USA, for example, will take a lot of effort and time for those of us struggling to learn the gaita and form a band. Forming a Centro would suck time from that.

From my conversations with the Consejo de Comunidades, their first priority is to try to preserve or revive the few Centros that now exist in the US. That's a laudable goal, although it may be too late already. (I think the only officially-certified Centro is in Tampa, FL, but there are several others, such as NYC, Los Angeles and Miami.)

--------------------------

De hecho, hemos considerado esa opción. Muchas veces.

Incluso no veo a mis proprios primos.
