Yeah, that's an interesting story, Camandula. I didn't know Pitt had an interest in architecture.

Has Asturias become like a charity that needs the help of a celebrity spokesperson or advocate to help it gain public attention and raise funds?

--------------------

Hi, Art.

From my point of view (I`m architect), Avilés is trying to follow the way Bilbao has reconverted from an heavy industrial city to a turistic one. They used the Guggeheim museum as "atraction point". Avilés is using the Niemeyer Cultural Centre for it.

Avilés is making a great effort to become a cultural reference in northern Spain. During the last years a lot of famous people has been invited to our town: Omar Shariff, Norman Foster, Brad Pitt, Paulo Coelho, Bob Dylan (Dylan didn't come, but he promised to), etc., but oriented in a cultural way.

In fact, Brad Pitt's visit wasn't announced in any media until today, the day before he arrived. Everyone knew about his visit because people saw him walking by the city as another tourist, not by the media.

Avilés is trying to attract the attention on the big proyects that are being developing here, because it always has been like "the poor and ugly sister" of Oviedo (rich and stilish) and Gijón (big and popular). But I don´t think at all that it's a search of funds as you say, like a charity org searching for the help of famous people.

It's like the city saying: "Forget about steel factories. I´m waking up, see what I can do".

About Pitt's interest in architecture, I think it's a kind of "temporary hobbie". I don´t take it very seriously... He became a Frank Ghery (a very overvalued architect from my point of view) fanatic not long time ago.

Greetings from Avilés.

Hola Art:

Me estoy despertando.

Well, Avilés *does* have a lot of wonderful old architecture and interesting neighborhoods, so it could be a tourist destination.

I realize that Bilbao has the Guggenheim, but does Bilbao also have a significant local arts community: artists, writers, musicians, actors, etc.? Does Avilés?

--------------------------

Excuse my lack of tolerance on the topic of Areces (the Asturian president), but his photo opp with Brad Pitt in Aviles is nothing short of a starf*cking. The peak of his political ideology is having his picture taken next to a famous person so he can advance his vision-less policies.

I tried to explain this verb (starf*cking) to an Asturian friend yesterday, but could not come up with a local equivalent. After seeing the picture, there was a compelling instinct to give Pitt's publicist the lowdown on Areces and his government. I have, so far, refrained.

As for Aviles being the ugly duckling of the 3 Central Asturian cities, I think we'd all agree. But its use as yet another political instrument for the FSA (the ruling party in Asturias for 30 years) is objectionable, no matter how bad the town would like to gentrify its image.

Here is a blogger's entry speculating how much money may have been involved in bringing the actor to Asturias:

http://xuanxose.blogspot.com/2009/08/cu ... -pitt.html

----

When I read the article, a petty corner of my brain remembered that when I "met" Areces this summer, he looked at me for a mili-second while shaking my hand before he looked away and completely ignored me. He was still shaking my hand as he turned away. I was impressed by the ultra rudeness. He gave me no opportunity to say a thing. Maybe I should have kept holding on to his hand! Ha!

Obviously, Brad got a bit more attention. I suppose I'm not quite as cute as Brad, eh?!

Well, we laughed about the event, but it created a strong impression (negative).

----------------------------

I agree with your about Areces. He's not a good politician. I met him several times, in building inaugurations, etc.
He only worries about being in the photos and eat as much as he can.

Areces has passed his time to retire, but he's like a "llámpara" in his seat at the goverment. He also has few old friends in the Asturias goverment that are well known because of their null political capacity.
It's time for a political change.

Avilés was has always been "left apart" by the Asturian Goverment. Also, Aviles city council has always been known by the internal fights between Izquierda Unida and PSOE, where surprinsingly, the PSOE goverment of Asturias never took part, neither to help local PSOE.

The last municipal lelections showed an important risisng of the PP (Partido Popular) and other similar politically oriented alternatives.

In this video you can see Pitt avoiding to shake Areces hand because of
the rests of tortilla de patata in the president's hand:

-------------------------------------------------------
Trans. Ana

The question is:

How much did this trip cost Asturians so this actor promotes Areces' urban fiddles?

Ha, ha... That's funny about the photos and eating.

Yes, it's clear that Asturias needs a change. Any party that rules for more than 10-15 years is going to become too self-satisfied and self-serving. Then again, I'm not sure PP has the necessary vision and creative thinking to take advantage of the weakness of PSOE. They might, for example, co-opt some of the issues in which PSOE has been leading and take a true lead in doing something about those issues. Legalization of Asturianu might be one, as would the establishment of eco-parks like the one Llames has talked about

Camandula, your English is generally good, but it would definitely help us understand some of the awkward phrases if you translated your messages into Spanish, too. Also, many of our members can't read English, so it would help them if you wrote in both languages. (The forum is a great place to practice the languages!)

-----------------------------

Good question and I agree entirely with the logic. As I've mentioned before, I'd hate to pay taxes in Asturias given the mediocrity of the FSA, its complete disregard for real economic policy and its rent-seeking attitude, as well as its disdain for Asturian culture. Having just paid taxes in France last week (and it was no humble sum), I would go ballistic here in Asturias...

----

That's pretty crass, Art, and an obvious indicator of what Areces is really like: a political animal that craves power to the extreme in the name of faceless constituents. Thanks for the anecdote. Now you probably sense better than I can what the nature of Asturian politicians of the PSOE/FSA is like. They fill their propaganda with arguably good concepts (solidarity, social justice, equality: all good things in everyone's vocabulary). Then they turn around and take advantage of the goodwill. They are an utter farce.

What he does crave really is public power. I know it very well since he was also 16 years as the mayor of my city.

Just a few hours after he made the photo with Brad Pitt in Avilés, he was making himself the photo again with Laporta, Quini and Preciado before the Barça - Sporting football match would begin...

But he's not only one. It's the main feature of the spanish politician :|

Maestro Tomberi's message has given me an idea. Would it be helpful to expose this photo-opportunity posturing on a website, with some humor thrown in?

Oh, boy, I don't know that I want to be that politically active, but I'd envision this as a site that exposed the hypocricy of politicians of any party.

----------------------------

Hi everyone!

How are you all doing? I hope you're fine.

It is obvious this Pitt's visit has raised people's hackles. Reading commentaries in La voz de Avilés digital edition confirmed my expectations.

Some say he received 12.000€ plus expenses. I don't know whether this is true or not. But of course he was paid. Any doubts? How come Pitt would have come to Avilés any other way?

And it's not a matter of the city being ugly or that doesn't have interest. It's just that I don't imagine Brad Pitt waking up one morning thinking of coming here.

Best regards,
Ana

¿Alguna duda?

Saludos,
Ana
