Duardo el de Sabina, Sardéu, Master of the Gaita Asturiana

Post by Art »

Xosé Ambás has a TV program, Camín de Cantares, in which he interviews folk musicians and singers in every corner of Asturias. There's usually a dialogue in the Asturian language and then some songs.

In this program Ambás interviews 82-year-old Duardo (Eduardo) el de Sabina, from the pueblo of Sardéu in the Ribadesella or Ribadeseya county in Eastern Asturias. Duardo learned to play the gaita Asturian bagpipe) from the father of one of the greatest Asturian pipers ever, José Remis Ovalle.

Unfortunately, the fuelle (bag) on Durado's gaita is bad, so to play for this program he had to borrow a gaita. This man's abilities are incredible, especially so when you realize that he hasn't practiced ahead of time and he's playing an unfamiliar, borrowed gaita.

The videos are cut a bit crudely, so you may enter in the middle of a tune.

If you just have time for one, try this:
