Lou is a former Major League Baseball outfielder and manager. He has been nicknamed "Sweet Lou," both for his swing as a major league hitter and, facetiously, to describe his demeanor as a player and manager. He finished his managerial career ranked 14th all-time on the list of Managerial Wins.

Piniella grew up in West Tampa, Florida of Asturian Spanish descent. As a child, he played American Legion Baseball sponsored by Post 248 and PONY League Baseball. He attended Jesuit High School of Tampa where he was an All-American in basketball. After graduation, he attended the University of Tampa where he was an All-American in baseball. He is the son of Margarita Magadan and Louis Pinella.
