abellugu: pronounced Ah-bay-YOO-gooh. In West Asturias, abel.lugu, pronounced with the ‘ts’ sound as Ah-bay-TSOO-gooh. A noun that describes a place to take cover from bad weather or protect from danger.

An abellugu / abel.lugu can be a simple mountain construction with a single pitch to provide shelter from the elements. Synonyms at cover, den, hideout, lean-to, makeshift, retreat, sanctuary, shelter.

Word variants at belugu or bilugu (County Teberga).The verb form is abellugar / abel.lugar. As an adverb, it is used in the expression tar al abellugu [to be sheltered].

Usage examples:

A Llastra da Filadoira fadia d’abel.lugu pa los aldeanos que diban pula Carreiriega. [The dolmen known as Llastra da Filadoira worked as a shelter for villagers walking along the ancient roadway known as the Carreiriega.]

Punximonos al abellugu na terraza de Casa Koty. [We took cover on the terrace of Casa Koty.]

De nenos, abel.lugabanos embaxo’l horriu. [When we were kids we sought shelter under the granary.]

Nolo abel.lugou no castaneiru anantias que lu matara un rayu. [Nolo sought cover under the chestnut tree before he was struck by lightning.]
