A vueltes col vinu español

Rifts with the Spanish wine

Regrettably, many years after the end of the Francoism, there still be the habit of "Spanish wine" in the formal official acts in Asturies, and from LA SIDRA we still working to replace it with cider or Asturian wine.

It is not surprising that in a country in which the "autonomic" government continues to celebrate the formal events with Spanish wine in public with the contempt for the Asturian cider or wine, there still are collectives that maintain that rancid francoist expression in today's Asturies.

From LA SIDRA, and thanks to the collaboration of the readers who told us about this kind of facts, we continue to ask these collectives to recover the common sense and proceed to replace the Spanish wine for Asturian cider or wine.

The last case that we dennounce corresponds to the Llaviana Photographic Association, ofwhich we knew through one of our readers, and this was the message sent to them:

Dear Sirs.

"From LA SIDRA, and fulfilling our objectives to strenghten Asturian cider as an identitary and cultural element, we contact you begging you to reconsider the celebraton of your General Meeting ending with Spanish wine, and use instead Asturian cider in any of the varieties for that kind of event.

As you surely know, the topic of the "Spanish wine" is just a reminiscence of the most rancid francoism, unaceptable in nowaday's Asturies.

On the other hand, in the case you are a very lovers of the wine, we remind you that there is available Cangas wine with which you can fulfill the goals of the event"

Vino español

Post by Marta Elena Díaz García »

Hola Anzu:

Marta.

Hi, Anzu:
I think it is a nonsense to state that say "Spanish wine" is a reminiscence from the times of Franco.

Which was the name of the “Spanish wine” before Franco? Was, perhaps, Franco the one who discovered the Spanish wine?

I do believe that everybody understand that under “Spanish wine” all the wines produced in Spain are included, without the need to clarify if it is from Rioja, from Cangas, from Rueda or from any other region. Does it?

Also, the wine from Cangas was not commercially available before as it is now and its quality was not comparable with that of wines produced in other Spanish regions.

Spanish wine

Post by Anzu »

Bones, Marta.

---------

Hello, Marta.

To begin, I remind you that it was not me who wrote this, so it's not an opinion of mine, but from the drafting of the web www.lasidra.as, where this new was published.

I think that what they mean with the Francoism topic is to use the Spanish wine instead of the products from the area in the official events, not just using or inventing it. However it is true that durign Franco's dictatorship (as well as in other fascist regimes like Mussolini or Hitler) they tried to remark the products considered as identitary for the whole country, to the detriment of those coming from other nations of the state.

In the case of Spain this was made with the wine and oil, for bing representative and identitary products of the Spanishness, decreasing the use of any others in official envents. In that way nowadays there is the same situation.

About that everybody understands that under "Spanish wine" all the wines produced in Spain are included, in this mean of communication have a different point of view.

In all the news of this kind they speak about products from the Spanish State, not from Spain, which may imply some kind of political unity. Here they make a clear difference between and Asturian and a Spanish product, thinking that one thing does not fit inton the other, the same distinction they make while speaking about Asturies and Spain.

In other links there are more about this topic, so I encourage everybody to look in this page for references or terms like "Spanish State", "identitary" or similar. Anyway it is clear that not everybody is fine with that classification you mention.

Regarding Cangas wine, it has benn always there and it has always been commercialized (at least since the middle of the XVII century), though it was not supported institutionally and like this new comments, it was declined in to the detriment of the Spanish wine.

A good example of this may be the taxes for the production, selling and distribution that the Cangas wine suffered through the middle of the XX century due to an order from Madrid, hampering it in a way never seen regarding Spanish wine.

It is because of it that this wine is less stronger, far from being a matter of quality, since nowadays there are Cangas wine that have nothing to envy any other wine, reaching some of them a higher price than many Riojas.

Opiniones

Post by Marta Elena Díaz García »

Hola Anzu:

Saludinos,
Marta.

Hi, Anzu:

It is true that everybody has a particular point of view. Diversity is our strenght. I think that talking about nations into one state, is ridiculous.

Which is the sense of saying that the Spanish wine (or the oil) is promoted aginst the interests of wines from other regions of Spain?

I do believe it is a way to wallow in self-pity and I do refuse this idea.

It is better to think that the wine from Cangas is Spanish wine, that it is currently improving its quality and that it is starting to be known abroad. We are growing. :D

In my opinion, wine from Cangas is as Spanish as they are those from Toro or Valdepeñas. Cangas is in Spain, consequently all those products from Cangas are Spanish, no matter who I have to upset.

I am sorry, Anzu, but I do believe that the love for Asturias is not stronger if you think that Asturias is an excluded region, but quite the opposite. Asturias has a lot to show to others, but also we have a lot to learn. :D

Yours,
Marta.

Bones Marta:

-------

Hi Marta:

To say that nations have always existed, states are its administrative representation.

When I say 'to the detriment of' I mean the imposition of taxes on the marketing of a particular product rather than the entire set of such products. And may be taxes or laws or edicts, in any case, all these examples are given for the Asturian products.

In any case it is not what is "better to think" but of opinions and identities. Many Cangas winemakers do understand that no, that their product is Asturian and that's all, that it has nothing to do with the Toro or Valdepeñas wine. Precisely that's why they do not put "Spanish wine", "Spanish product" or anything like that on the labels. And as you say, is gaining quality and becoming known outside.

I see self-pity nowhere, I am proud of who I am and where I come from, and I have one thing clear, I do not come from any "region". I think we have enough history and culture to not feel marginalized.

-------

Hola Marta:

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Perhaps you didn't write it, but at any rate it's one of your redaction's partner, since you work for the printed publication, and when publishing this arcticle you're leaving manifest your subscription to the previously written opinion. Or in other more vulgar words, You're rather biased (somehow). Or at least it gives me that impression.

I Coincide also with Marta Elena in the fact; like it or not that's what there is... that Cangas wine in the same way Toro wine, Ribera del Duero wine, as any other spanish wine... that "francoist" product that specially in anglosaxon countries is considered the summum of liberality and intellectuality doesn't lose for being precisely spanish and that showing it quality to the world under a spanish ensign is not bad. But I know that mere idea provokes you real urticaria. In the same way Woody Allen and the "tuna" students (to set up given examples)produce it to me, and however I bite hard and endure.

I think it's more than alright you want to support asturian products; with particular interest towards cider, and the asturianhood in general, which is very good, infact I think it's fantastic... But it's a big big mistake from you to use this awesome publication; btw, as a throwing weapon to deep the knee into an excluding nationalism. It's just not right.

Yo no utilizo armas, utilizo noticias, informacion.

-------

Well sorry to report that I have no "redaction partner", in fact I don't know the redactors, I'm just working as a TRANSLATOR..

Do not fall in vain accusations, that makes it clear who suffers urticaria because of this kind of opinions, that as you well have said, I share.

If I post news from that publication regularly is because there is an agreement between both managers of the webpages and to post some of the news on this forum is part of MY JOB. The opinion reflected in them is beyond my decision.

What you are ignoring is that it is not about if I like it or not, this is not a fight, no one wins. All that matters is what they think: a) the Cangas wine producers about his product and b) the buyers of that product. They both have a common view while defining the product, a view that I also share and that is perhaps what you are not comfortable with.

I'm surprised that you take the liberty to judge not only opinions but even people, Maestro Tomberi. I do not use weapons, I use news and information. Unlike others I do not impose my political opinion, I simply post news again, doing my job.

It seems that there should be more composure at the time of writing.

--------

The details of my contract are not of your concern. Apart of working as translator I also occasionally work as provider of images, without implying any kind of cosmic coincidence or conspiracy. I simply said that I did not write the news. Nonetheless, even if it did, little could you do about it, am I right, Iván Díaz García? I use information conveniently, obviously I will not post anything that I do not agree with, it would be disingenuous of me, for much crime you want to see on it.

My only excitement is to put my opinions, that you categorize them as "commercial separatism" or ideological one, seems like a nice way to refer to them. Be sure to give your vision of things, a lot of people are interested.

I suggest you to enjoy the latest news in the world of cider that I will continue posting regularly, to enjoy the opinions expressed in them and to encourage you to leave your honest opinion as comments on this forum as well as in the web of the news.

When I speak of composure I mean, for example, do not swear. I do not think I have committed that mistake.

Bien.

I agree with Art on the desirability of limiting ourselves to the matter.

I find it curious that you define independence nationalist as separatism. It also seems strange to me that comparison with the Tea Party, since virtually every independentist parties of the Spanish State, whether in Galicia, Asturies, Basque Country, Navarre and Catalonia are strongly socialist, since social services are one of the mainstays in common in the pool of the political formations of this kind.

As it would not be advisable to continue the discussion on this post, I opened a new thread: http://www.asturianus.org/forum/viewtop ... 2361#22361
