Cuban born of Asturian/Canarian heritage

Post by Tony Garcia »

I am pleased to have found your forum. It has given me information about sources to investigate in my quest to find genealogy information to leave my children. I had no idea that my paternal great grandfather, Jose Garcia Cuervo, and his parents, Vicente Garcia and Manuela Cuervo, were born in Oviedo. Only after beginning my research did this information come to light.

My maternal grandfather, Simeon Diaz Delgado, was born in the Canary Islands, probably La Palma. He migrated to Cuba around the late 1800's.

It was an eye opener when I started to look into the Asturian culture and found out through my DNA testing how closely related we are to our Celtic cousins in France, England, Ireland, Scotland and Portugal. Mind blowing to say the least when I saw youtube videos of bagpipers playing what seemed Irish jigs and Scottish music.

I was born in Cuba in 1941 and migrated to the US in 1952. Springfield, Missouri has been my residence since 1988 and resided in the New York City area from 1952 until 1973.

Glad to be a part of this group. By the way, are there any Asturian clubs in the Midwest?

Perhaps surprisingly, yes, there are Asturian groups in the Midwest. The St. Louis Missouri area remains one of the areas with the strongest representation of Asturian culture in the US today.

The Spanish society of St. Louis Mo:

The Rana League in St. Louis Missouri:

There are other posts that talk about there still being a bar or restaurant in the area, if I remember correctly.
