Manuel Ardura de la zona Luarca

Post by jackie »

Saludos,
Jackie

Hello, Jackie,

I'll assume you can read English, since you're in Utah. That will save me some time and make it easier for our dear translators.

As you obviously know, Valdés [earlier known as "Luarca"--see Loredo's note below] is the concejo where both Bárcia and Carlangas are located. (Carlangas is also called "Carŝangas." I've never seen the accent over the "s" before!)

But these places aren't right next to each other. My map shows Carlangas to be about 5 km southeast of Luarca and about 5 km inland. It is about 2 km from San Antonio de Conceillero (on the map, it has an icon for "monastery, heritage or or sanctuary"), further out from Luarca.

It could be that your records are at San Antonio de Conceillero, but I don't think it's a parish church. Does anyone know?

Bárcia is within 1 km of the Cantabrian Sea, directly east of Luarca by about 3 km, but also almost due north of Carlangas about 4 km.

You might find useful information on this page: http://www.ldelpino.com/consejos.html
They have resources on finding this info, although I've had trouble getting the links to function.

[Art: the site is now gone, but available in the www.WaybackMachine.org archive:
http://web.archive.org/web/200501210915 ... eneal.html
Try that instead.]

Perhaps some of our Asturian members know which parish these towns are in?

Art,

Thank you for your quick reply.
You mentioned you have maps from Carlangas. Where can I get copies of those maps?
It will really help me to be graphically knowledgeable with the area.

Thank you for the link you sent,
Saludos,
Jackie

Jackie,

First of all, don't get desperate with your search because it is a very rewarding activity. On the other hand, it is also very time consuming.

In your particular case, the first step is pretty obvious: you should contact the Registro Civil (RC) of Concejo de Valdés for the birth certificate of your abuelo because they have the data of all the parroquias you are looking for.

The data you can find in the birth certificate of the RC and the baptism record of the parish are very similar. Both provide you with the given name (no always identical), date of birth, name and birthplace of the parents and name and birthplace of the grand-parents (indicating if they were alive or dead at the time).

Once you have the birth certificate of your abuelo you can start searching your great-grandparents, great-great-grandparents and so on. This time you must use the parish archives because the RC started in June 1870. The good news for you are that most of the parish archives in this area have data since the first half of the XVII century and therefore you have the possibility of going back in your genealogical tree for, at least, 10 generations.

The bad news are that gathering the data for a tree like that is a very hard work (we are talking of more than 400 people: 1 grandparent, 2 great-grandparents, 4 great-great-grandparents, 8 fourth-grandparents, 16 fifth-grandparents, and so on). Based on my own experience, I guess you'll need more than a month of vacation in Asturias working both in the parishes and the Archivo Diocesano to accomplish such a task.

The main problem is that the parish archives of the XVII and XVIII centuries are not as nice as those of the XIX century: no grandparents names, extended use of hardly understandable abbreviations, language becomes more similar to Latin than to modern Spanish, etc. In summary, you need to find both the baptism and marriage certificates to be sure of the identity of the person.

Anyway, you are far away of having these problems because the firsts steps (writing to the RC for finding the birth certificate of your abuelo and to the parishes to have the baptismal records of your great-grandparents) are very easy. If you need my help on these tasks, please, let me know.

Regards.

Jackie,

If you want to familiarize yourself with the area, I recommend you the Vivir Asturias website. If you look into the concejo de Valdés you'll find the addresses of the Registro Civil and parishes, the different poblaciones (including Carlangas) and a map of the area with some zoom.

Regarding Carlangas, the website says that it currently has 33 inhabitants and 10 houses. They have 20 pictures of the place to give you an overall idea. In the map you can find Carlangas if you follow up the road AS-220 SE of Luarca (is the green road starting at Almuña and Fontoria).

Attached you'll find a link to the map

If you need more detailed cartographical info, let me know.

Regards.

Hi, Loredo,

My map says the concejo name is "Luarca", but it's from 1977. Has the name changed to "Valdés?" (If so, I'll amend my post above!)

Have many of the concejo names changed? That would complicate things, wouldn't it!?

Art,

The concejo of Valdés was called concejo of Luarca from January 1909 until December 1985 when the Municipality of Valdés decided to recover the traditional name by unanimous decision.

In my opinion, there are not so many changes in the name of the concejos.

Arduras en Valdés

Post by Carlos »
