THE PONGA CORRICORRI

Thing is, in the mountains of Ponga I documented the memory of a dance called corricorri, not exactly the same as the very famous one from Arenas de Cabrales albeit with several similarities.
In Tolivia, a village now failed, was born in 1913 Ramón Frutoso Llamazales Díaz, who in December 1993 could tell me still about this corricorri from Ponga.
It was similar to the one from Arenas since more women than men took part in it, as opposed to other dances, also in the jumps that men performed, in how beautiful it used to be, how exhausting, in that the male, in Arenas, performs many half - spins and a few full spins, in that women were holding plants in their hands and basically in the fact that the guy follows the girls and the other way round, too. In Tolivia the erotic content of the dance was far more evident than in Arenas.
It used to be danced, Ramon claimed, in Viboli, Casielles, El Cándanu and Viegu, these being villages in the municipality of Ponga.
Other men and women from Ponga and Amieva who knew the name were Julia Vidarte María (from La Caviella), Gerardo Díaz Llamazales (from Bores), Mariano and Benina Toribio Rodríguez (Tanda), Teresa Pérez Díaz and Salvador Pérez Cueto (Vallimoru), Manuela Fana Álvarez (Pen, Amieva) and Gabriel Iglesias Domingo (San Inacio; he called it correcorre).
It is worth noting as well that Ramón Huerta Posada quotes among the dances from Llanes "the danza, the pericote or corre-corre, the giraldilla, the fandango, the gallegada, the seguidillas...".
Also, the novel writer Antonio Quintana Menéndez, from the village of Puertas de Riegu in Llanes, writes that in the day of the Cristo del Camino (La Portiella, Llanes) "here in a ring the corre corre is performed, a dance native to our area and unknown in all the rest of the province".
And let it be noted too that in Cos (Mazcuerras, Cantabria) the correcorrecorre, with a man and a woman or two women was so called "because it was a rushed dance". And in Zurea (Tsena) the "corricorri" was a game for boys and teens.
All this I published it in the book Tradiciones curiosas de Asturias, ([Llanes], 1994, pages 20 to 28 ).

The thing is, now I learn that Julio de Prado Reyero (Sahelices de Sabero, 1927 - Lleón, 2014), in the page 67 of the book Cistierna y sus comarcas (Cistierna, 1980), he mentioned a similar dance bearing the same name who he says was performed in locations in Leon very close to the villages in Ponga I just mentioned:
«We are collecting a handful of legends from our land, which have been rendered to us by tradition.
»In the areas bordering with Asturias a dance used to exist known as «Corricorri» preserved no doubt from the Celts, in which warriors and noble men would pick their wives. The most beautiful women would be gathered from all the tribes wearing their best attires. They would dance to captivate the knight and they turned around him until they accomplish it. In this fashion the chosen one would choose his future wife".

¡Gracias!
