GAITERU

Post by Marta Elena Díaz García »

I have found the picture below and I think that this "gaiteru" looks alike the one in the Photo Album (José Antonio Menéndez Alvarez).

This picture was taken around 1925 by José Ortiz Echagüe.
It is labeled as "Toño el gaitero". Toño is a nickname for Antonio.

Could he be the same person?

You've got a very good eye, Marta! That's my great-great maternal grandfather. And it is the same person in both photos.

I think Terechu may have recognized that link between the two photos a while back, as you can see in this thread:

I hope you're doing well!

Hi, Art

I had'n seen the picture of Carlos, sorry.

The original of this picture can be seen in Museo del Traje. Centro de Investigación del Patrimonio Etnológico

Height = 21,50 cm; Width = 38,70 cm

The picture is fixed to white cardboard (50 x 62.5 cm) with passe-partout.

My best regards, Art.

Hi, Marta,

I didn't realize it was shown in a museum, too.

I'm pleased you noticed the similarity. (We argued about it for a long time on the forum, but I think the evidence was solid.)

The photos and others are also in the book España: Tipos y Trajes, a book of the photos taken by José Ortiz Echagüe. Toño (in one case just his clothing and gaita, worn or held by a boy) also appear in two other photos in the book. The two others are probably family, too, but the family has no idea of who they are.

That's so true! I had no idea that the images existed until someone on the forum told me about Ortiz Echagüe's book. I had my own traje created based on Toño's.
