Thanks Bob, in our case, there is some Italian showing up in my oldest brother's DNA. Evidently, there was some Roman connection in the past. We were definitely surprised. Even so, we still consider ourselves as Asturian Americans.

There has been so much immigration into Asturias that it makes the idea of a "genetic Asturian" more aspirational than reality. From what I've seen, kids who grow up in Asturias and whose parents immigrated from another region in Spain, still consider themselves Asturian. And they should! Some, like a cousin of mine, do take pride in having a multi-generational Asturian lineage.

My mom's family tree on both sides stretches back in central Asturias seven generations. Even so, the 23andMe results point to a mixed heritage, 74% Spanish (and possibly a tiny bit Portuguese), but the rest is connected to populations across all of Europe.
