Thanks, JASM!

Has anyone fact-checked Varsavsky's statements for accuracy?

I could believe Spain is a better place to live, but I heard small business people around the year 2000 complain about the taxes and regulations in Spain. Then again, I hear the same complaints here in the US.

I read the second of the two cited articles, and find myself in basic agreement with it. In terms of quality and cost of health care, educational debt, life expectancy, crime and incarceration rates, proportion of homeless individuals, etc., Spain has the clear advantage. However I can't agree with the article's assertion that the cost of living is high in Spain. Prices here in New England are considerably higher than in Asturias.

In fairness, I should point out that the article focuses primarily on Madrid and San Francisco.

Could Madrid be as expensive as San Francisco? At least for housing SF is outrageous, isn't it?

Yes, according to what I have read San Francisco housing costs may be the highest in the nation.
