This is such a very hurtful day for all Americans. And all those who lost loved ones on that horrific day.

They tried to destroy our way of life and were unsuccessful. We are a strong country fiercely proud of who we are...that cannot be destroyed.

We are having tributes to those who lost their lives at the World Trade Center, The Pentagon and that field in Pennsylvania.

Hopefully we will never forget what happened on that day three years ago. Words cannot describe the pain and suffering felt by the families who lost loved ones, and we Americans who feel their pain.

GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Today, the third anniversary of the shameful and futile destruction of thousands of lives in the World Trade Center, draws me closer to my friends in Asturias and other regions in Spain who suffered their own terrorist attack just before the election, and--most recently--reminds me of the people of Russia who have recently experienced two bombed airplanes and the loss of many innocent children.

In a world gone mad, I still take satisfaction in knowing that places like our website have brought us together across the miles and helped us to better understand one another. If ordinary people rather than "leaders" ran the world, our children and grandchildren might find it a better place. Thank you all for your friendship and your willingness to help one another.

Warm hugs to all,
Abrazos para todo(a)s,
Abrazus pa too(a)s,

Bob Martinez

I don't think I can find any words to sufficiently condemn the 9/11 attacks. I watched it all live (I was watching the 15.00 h TV news when it happened) and I had to take a linden tea to calm my nerves. I had nightmares that night, it all seemed so monstrous. It was definitely the end of innocence for you Americans who never lived through a war on your own soil and also for those of us who thought there was still a last safe place to live, a last haven.
Things have gotten much worse since then and there seems to be no way back. I wonder what the future holds. It's scary, though.

"Mieu" me da!

Saludos

The problem – the death toll notwithstanding, which unfortunately was very high, as in any act of war, i.e. Hiroshima, Dresden, Stalingrad, etc.- is that it was the first “live” terrorist attack.

“Terrorism” in my opinion is a violent marketing operation. I don’t know if it was that well planned, but just look: the first plane crashes into the tower. People wondering if it was an accident or what the hell...When the second crash took place, literally half of the humanity was watching events live. Terrorism live, with all the media coverage. I wish to point out that we live in an “all-for-show” society, and as you said in another post, Terechu, only what’s shown on TV exists.

Bear in mind that if these attacks had taken place elsewhere in the world, without live camaras, it would have had scarcely any media coverage. There’s a rule of thumb in journalism according to which the importance of any such news where victims are involved is measured by dividing the number of victims by the distance in kilometers. Terrorists know that well, and although far from us (Spaniards), the WTC was a symbol of the capitalist world at our very doorstep and almost like our own. It’s as if the attacks had taken place right before our front door. So it is in this aspect where I disagree with Bush’s politics of invading countries, because terrorism plays to other tunes and we must adjust to that threat, but not by applying traditional war tactics that only kill innocent people and serve as breeding ground for more terrorism.
Thus, in my opinion, the first, difficult step to fight that blemsih would be to devoid terrorism of its show-like aspects, in other words, not allow it to become a form of marketing strategy. Terrorism is publicity and without publicity it will lose most of its reason for being. As some wise man said, the tree that falls in the forest makes no noise if there’s no one there to hear it.

But we do live in a capitalist system and who's going to ask journalists and TV stations not to turn this type of events into a show (= money)? Honestly, I believe that all those days endlessly showing the same images time and again, was like playing by the terrorists rules. What better publicity could they ask for?
Careful, though - I’m not asking for information to be censored, only that these things should not be turned into a show, 1st so as not to serve the terrorists’ purpose and 2nd out of respect for the victims, in my opinion.
I believe that here as well as there both the media and the politicians are using the victims to their advantage.

....just a little thought in a cool, rational, not emotional moment.
