Piedras Blancas

Post by TONY »

Hello,

I stumbled upon this website during genealogical research. My parternal grandparents were from Piedras Blancas and maternal grandparents were from a town close to Oviedo (I will provide the name as soon as it is available).

I would like to find out more about my ancestry and where they lived.

Tony

Hola

Further to my previous email, both grandparents immigrated to Ybor City (Tampa Bay area) circa 1900.

I will submit a photo shortly.

Tony, take a look at the following site provided by the University of South Florida using records from the Centro Asturiano de Tampa:

http://www.lib.usf.edu/ldsu/index2.html ... tionid=C16

Approximately 5300 Spaniards, mostly Asturians belonged to the Centro Asturiano in the early 20th Century. Their pictures may be on the site, but sadly little other detail.

http://www.lib.usf.edu/ldsu/index2.html ... tionid=C16

That website is very interesting and will be searched throughly :) I have always wanted to research my Great Grandmother's maiden name - Fabian, who arrived in Ybor from Cuba, actually. To date I have nothing on her family and Fabians in the Tampa area do not respond to my emails :( Rumoured to be a common Galician surname.

Any more helpful pointers?

PS I was adopted by an Anglo family, thus my research is one layer more difficult. Just tracking down my Spanish roots was a project in itself!

Hi Tony and welcome,
Until such time as you find more about your grandmother's birth place, have a look at the phone guide for Asturias

http://blancas.paginasamarillas.es/jsp/home.jsp

Just pick "Asturias" from the Province drop-down menu and then enter "Fabian" in the "Apellido" box. You will see that that surname is very frequent in the western part of Asturias (counties Parres and Piloña) but there are also a few in Oviedo itself.

By the way, I don't believe Fabian is Galician at all, it's really a Roman Latin name and as such it exists in all Latin countries, including the part of Germany that was once part of the Roman Empire. I had a class mate in Stuttgart whose last name was Fabian and she was as German as a Bretzel.

Cheers

Hola Tony, y bienvenido,

http://blancas.paginasamarillas.es/jsp/home.jsp

Ranon

Post by TONY »

You are correct about the surname Fabian, actually it's extremely common in Hungary as well.

My genealogical documents show that the town close to Oviedo was Ranon. I know about the airport, but I find very little information about the town of Ranon on the internet.

Can someone fill me in about Ranon?

Thanks in advance.

Hi, Tony,

Welcome to the forum!

My atlas lists two towns called "Ranón":
--one in the "county" or consejo of Luarca about 1-2 miles from the sea, and about 4 miles to the east of the town of Luarca.
--one in the consejo of Soto del Barco about 2/3 mile from the sea and 2-3 miles north of the town of Soto del Barco.

There is also a "Rano" in the consejo of Quirós, about a mile from the "county seat" of Bárzana.

All of these appear to be tiny pueblos.

It could be that what you are calling "Oviedo" is actually Asturias. Under Franco the Principality of Asturias was called "Oviedo", and that causes a lot of confusion since it is also a major city and a consejo.

Hola, Tony,

Hi Tony,
That should be an easy one: if your paternal grandparents were from Piedras Blancas (county Castrillón), then your maternal grandparents must be from Ranón in Soto del Barco county, which is borders on Castrillón.
And yes, the airport is offically called "Aeropuerto de Asturias" (Code OVD), but we Asturians call it "aeropuerto de Ranón", because that's where it is located.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Hmm... It's interesting that my atlas doesn't show a "Ranón" at the airport. The map does, however, show the airport as "Aeropuerto de Asturias-Ranón". Did the airport destroy that Ranón?

Umm...

No Ranón is very small.
On the highway that goes to the Airport of Asturias-Ranón, there is a turn-off to the left about 500 meters before you arrive at the airport. That turn-off takes you to the village of Ranón. In the summer they celebrate a romería that is very popular (attracts lots of people).

Hi Tony,
That should be an easy one: if your paternal grandparents were from Piedras Blancas (county Castríllón), then your maternal grandparents must be from Ranón in Soto del Barco county, which is borders on Castrillón.

Thanks for all the information, so based on the fact that my other set of grandparents were from Piedras Blancas, it would be my best bet to begin my search in Ranon in Soto del Barco county(near to airport) rather than the Ranon in Luarca as discussed by Art.

That's right, Tony. If you fly into Asturias, you step out of the plane and - voilà - step right into Ranón!

Thanks, Luis! Now I remember seeing a turn-off, but I didn't remember the name of the village.

Sources, hints, guide to Asutrian family records in Asturias

Post by Donald_Garcia »

My Father, Prudencio Garcia, was born in Salinas in 1899 (my mother in Santa Maria del Mar) in 1903). We have good records of the family after they arrived in the USA at the turn of the century from USA reords.

But I am not able to find any records of the family in Spain. I was told that most records were church recordand were lost during the civil war.

Since my father's name is Prudencio and his father's name was Prudencio and his grandfather's name was also Prudencio Garcia, I thought it might be easy to find some record of the family from Salinas, that is, the members that did not come to the states.

Has anyone had any success in finding information about the people that stayed behind when our families came to the states?

Donald, I'm sure that the person who can best inform you about the records you're looking for is my cousin DONNA SWEENEY. She is also a member of the forum, is an American, like yourself, and a descendent of Asturians who were also from Salinas. Better yet, she speaks your language. You can read in this section [Genealogy] what she did to successfully get the records you're looking for. And if I haven't understood you, I could put you in contact with her in this section of the forum. I hope that's been helpful. Best wishes and good luck.
