Terechu) Now there's one thing that doesn't change and that we can even retrieve if we wish, something that remains and will always be there: the Asturian language.

Astúricu, you began with a very good question!

It's clearly not the only one, but it is the most important element of Asturianity. The one thing that will differentiate us from Castillians, Galicians, Italians or Canadians is not what we eat, what we wear, what we laugh about, what we do or how we behave in this globalized world, is not what we say but how we say it, it is our language.
Language doesn't change? That's clearly not so. As you said, everything about culture changes, and even the physical world changes. Asturias is subtly different in its foods, music, humor, language, etc. Perhaps a huge part of the difference is simply believing that there is a difference!

-------------------
Elí wrote:(trans. Art) ...it must be something like being a Virginian in the US, not very different from the rest, just a little more free in loving the women.
Alfonso wrote:(trans. Terechu) Asturianity has no similarity with Virginian as you mention in the heading (in that case it would be Asturian).
Oh! Now I understand what Elí wrote at the top. Alfonso, Elí is saying that the state being (feeling) a Virginian is like the state of being (feeling) an asturian... along with a little wry humor.

It's true that in many countries the people have this feeling for their homeland. And it's the same feeling. The difference is in the details. In Virginia it's an attitude toward love and the "graceful" life of ladies and gentlemen.

ASTURIANIDÁ= ASTURIANITY

Post by astúricu »

trans. Art (corrections welcome!)

Could someone explain to me what it means to feel oneself to be Spanish?
As an Asturian I've never understood that. It couldn't be a way of cooking with olive oil and garlic, which is something that the Portuguese and Italians do, too.... The Iberian peninsula is a mosaic of nations [Art: in the sense of "peoples", I think] and if this is not understood.... I feel myself to be Asturian and European. Actually, I have no [sense of being] Spanish.
