Oscar Niemeyer y Avilés

Post by Terechu »

I don't know where to post this, so here goes.
One of the world's most famous architect, Oscar Niemeyer, who created Brazil's artificial capital "Brasilia" out of nowhere, has donated a spectacular architectural project to be built on Avilés's river front, to house a cultural center and eventually the museum of the Prince of Asturias Prizes. You can see some pictures here:

I find it rather old-fashioned myself, it sort of reminds me of the designs that were cutting edge in the 1930's and 40's, but still it's very powerful and high-impact complex. So much more elegant than Bilbao's baroque and over-rated Guggenheim... :P

Pretty cool actually. I like stuff from that era, dated or not.

Bob, the word "cool" is right. I like the minimalistic simplicity of that era much better than the current theatrical architecture designed by computer and absolutely unbearable. The new terminal (T-4) at Madrid Airport is scary! What a sinister place, what a madness of columns and what a dark ondulating roof that seems to fall on your head. If I had to work there I would have nightmares!

Berodia, speaking of Le Corbusier, I believe Niemeyer worked with him. I heard he's going to be 100 years old next year!

The word "cool", quintessentially late 1950's and early 1960's, is enjoying a resurgence in the EEUU. Our granddaughters use it all the time, in exactly the same ways as we would have way back then.
