We'd like to share with you the videos that we recorded of Xagardúa, the dance group from Colunga.

They interpret and dance these songs, among others: the Xiringüelu, the Dance of San Pedro…

Those are wonderful videos, WmBuscolu. The costumes were great, too.

I was surprised to see at least one man with a broad-brimmed hat (not the montera picona). Is that a traditional hat?

It's too bad there were a few people blocking the camera's view. We rarely get to see dances like that here in the US.

Thanks for sharing them with us!

The explanation at the top of this page:
http://www.buscolu.com/index.php?contenido=1946
is remarkable, so I want to translate it here.

This explains the oddly striking similarity of many of the "traditional" Asturian outfits.

[trans. Art]

XAGARDUA DANCE GROUP

One can appreciate in their clothes the variety of colors and weaves, unlike the traditional Asturian outfit. According to what we have been able to learn, traditional the Asturian outfit that all we know: the red skirt, etc. was imposed by the Feminine Section [Sección Femenina] in the days of the Dictatorship to unify the costumes that existed in the different zones of Asturias. This sort of government control occurred not only with respect to the clothes. The only songs and dances still have today are the ones the Dictatorship wanted: Xiringüelu.... Many Asturian songs and traditional dances were lost during that period.

-------------------

http://www.buscolu.com/index.php?contenido=1946
