Those are wonderful videos, WmBuscolu. The costumes were great, too.
I was surprised to see at least one man with a broad-brimmed hat (not the montera picona). Is that a traditional hat?
It's too bad there were a few people blocking the camera's view. We rarely get to see dances like that here in the US.

Son vídeos estupendos, WmBuscolu. Los trajes son fantasticos, también.
Fui sorprendido ver por lo menos a un hombre con un sombrero con una ala redonda y amplia (no el picona del montera). ¿Es un sombrero tradicional?
Qué lástima que habían gente bloqueando la vista del cámara. Pocas veces vemos la danza así en los EE.UU.

This explains the oddly striking similarity of many of the "traditional" Asturian outfits.

XAGARDUA DANCE GROUP
One can appreciate in their clothes the variety of colors and weaves, unlike the traditional Asturian outfit. According to what we have been able to learn, traditional the Asturian outfit that all we know: the red skirt, etc. was imposed by the Feminine Section [Sección Femenina] in the days of the Dictatorship to unify the costumes that existed in the different zones of Asturias. This sort of government control occurred not only with respect to the clothes. The only songs and dances still have today are the ones the Dictatorship wanted: Xiringüelu.... Many Asturian songs and traditional dances were lost during that period.

GRUPO DE BAILE XAGARDUA
En su vestimenta se pueden apreciar la variedad de colores y tejidos, al contrario del traje tradicional asturiano. Según hemos podido saber el traje tradicional asturiano que todos conocemos: falda roja... fue impuesto por la Sección Femenina en tiempos de la Dictadura para unificar los atuendos que existían en las diferentes zonas de Asturias. El intervencionismo no sólo tuvo lugar en lo referente a la vestimenta, ya que sólo han llegado a nuestros días las canciones y bailes que la Dictadura deseó: Xiringüelu... perdiéndose muchas canciones y bailes tradicionales asturianas durante esa época. |
