Post by Mafalda »

The winding tower of the Arnao mine was opened for a couple of hours on the last day of the Mining Encounter. How I wished I could have been there to see it! I hope Luis Argeo was able to get inside. Last week, while on the beach, we could see some workers with a crane busy repairing something on the roof. I hope that finally everything will be restored so it can be visited.
I'm posting these press photos of the last few days, because that's where our great-grandfathers and grandfathers went to extract coal under very harsh conditions. Sometimes they were "atercerados", they worked 3 consecutive night and day shifts in the pit, with the mules that pulled the waggons.
You can't see the entry to the mine, its on the first picture, almost hidden from sight by the 2nd tree (the one in the middle).

You are not alone. The Asturian community in West Virginia can't wait for the release of the documentary, either. There are two people that are no longer with us (Josephine Alvarez / Victor Gonzalez). I'm sad that they will not see the film, but I'm happy that their stories will not be lost. Do you know anything about the release of the film? I get two or three phone calls a week asking about the film. The Asturian community is excited about the film. Like you, Terechu, we can't wait.

Of course, the Spanish newspaper article calls us "Virginia". GRRRRRR. This really bugs me. We fought a war over it, in fact.

Ron, I don't know any more details about it. Luis sent me this link the other day, where the project is mentioned, but they don't mention any specific release date. I sent him an email today, maybe he answers us all himself.

Luis

Hello to all.
Thanks for the interest that you are showing in the documentary film. The truth is that, sometimes, even I get scared with so many responsibility. I simply consider myself as an amateur...
The point is that I am almost finishing it, I am in the post prodution step (sound and other details), and I hope that in less than one month it will be more or less finished (in these kind of works, you could be the whole life removing and putting, cutting and sticking, retouching ...)
Once finished, I will try to make some deal with it in Asturias, with the new Autonomic Television, but I do not want to move forward events. In other hand, I would love to do some kind of second meeting in West Virginia, doing a premier in some cinema or social hall in Morgantown, for example, and so the people of Donora (PA) that also took part in the film could assist. To see the docu film together would be marvellous.
The truth is that I have to do other works to eat something and survive, and that question don’t let me put myself 100% on it.
Anyway, be patience, cause only with the avidity that I have we could fill the court of the Mountainers ... jaja.
Thank you again, as soon as I could, I will be telling you all the advances.
By the way, the title of the documentary film is the same that this one of our page. AsturianUS. I am sorry to be so slightly original, but the fact is that the occurrence is simply the best, cojonuda...
Greetings,
Luis

Congratulations, Luis! I hope you win all the prizes! I already marked November 23rd on my calendar (it's almost here already) and will tell everybody to go see your documentary film at the Gijón International Film Festival. Most of my friends are loyal attendees of the festival, anyway.

gracias Terechu.
Luis

Thanks Terechu.
As soon as I know the date (day, place, hour...) I will post it here. Concerning the prizes, I cannot opt to the official section, no awards for us. the prize itself is that the docu film is going to be projected.
Luis

I am thinking about this: to do a première in Morgantown next year (by march...)

Ron, you rock my little world... You always have seat in my mind.
And you also have a seat here, in Asturias, if you want to come.
And of course, we will meet again in that piece of Asturias that for me is Spelter, Anmoore, Harrison County... Take care. We continue in touch.

Tomamos nota.

We have taken note. I, for one, won't miss it. For those from Avilés and surrounding area who depend on public transportation the show time might be a problem, but I hope that they manage, since this documentary film is for them.
