Cannibalism seems to have been rather prevalent among humans, some of our ancestors were also cannibals. The Delta CCR5 mutation for instance is carried by about 30% of the population of Europe, it apparently started in NorthEastern Europe and spread from there to the rest via maternal and paternal lines. This mutation gives people the ability to resist infection by the AIDS virus, although the person carrying this mutation will not be affected by AIDS he/she would still be a carrier and able to infect others with it. It is believed that the mutation was developed due to prion deceases, this is type of disease is usually (not necessarily) the result of cannibalism.

I would've liked to be able to claim that my ancestors 15,000 years ago were cannibals and ate their rivals but no such luck, I've tested negative on both lines.... bummer ;-)
