Túnel de nieve en S. Isidro /Snow tunnel at S. Isidro Pass

Post by Terechu »

For those of you who, like me, are fed up to your back teeth about all Spanish TV channels thinking that the north of Spain is only the Basque Country and thus only provide coverage of their events, here goes a photo of last week's snow tunnel on the road to San Isidro Pass, when all TV news broadcasts were showing images of places with slight snowfalls.
After a couple of days a news channel (Tele 5?) finally realized how idiotic it was to show images without any interest and they sent a reporter to Pajares Pass, where she promptly got snowed in. Had she driven an old Spanish-made Landrover Santana...
Anyway, ladies and gentlemen, when it snows in the north of the Iberian pensinsula, be reminded that the highest mountain passes of the Cantabrian mountain range are those of Asturias and León, and if you ever want to see really heavy snowfall, this is were you'll find it.

The photos are delightful, and make me wish that we had our usual snowfall here in New England. So far nothing at all except a light dusting or two, although snow is predicted for later today.

Gelaz is right, at least with respect to norteamericanos. When they think of the north of Spain, they think of the Basque country, not Asturias, Cantabria or Galicia, and most American's image of Spain is Madrid, Barcelona and the south. I think that there is much room for improvement here in terms of tourism awareness, and that a good advertising campaign from all of the northern areas could increase income from tourism dramatically.
