Post by Bob »

Some families in Spelter, including my grandparents (Victor Martínez Artime and Josefa--called Sena--Fernández Inclán), took in boarders to supplement their income and to give new immigrants a place to live until they could make more independent arrangements. My grandmother cooked and did laundry not only for her family, but for the boarders as well. Family legend has it that my grandfather, who was only in his twenties at the time, kept order among the slightly younger boarders with a bullwhip.

My father remembers that one of the boarders in the early 1920's was called Joroba (hunchback). The other was a man who later became Lisa Garcia's husband. Does anyone know anything about these people? Does anyone else have memories of their family taking in boarders?

I am fascinated by the possibility that Leandro Fernández Peláez, 102 years old recently interviewed for an article in lne.es, may have been a boarder at my grandparents' home. If anyone can contact him, please ask if he remembers Victor Martínez Artime (called Viturón) and Josefa Fernández Inclán (called Sena) in Spelter, West Virginia. Victor was born in Salinas in 1894, and Josefa in San Martín de Laspra in 1895. They moved to the US in 1913, and to West Virginia a year or two later. At the time Leandro lived in Spelter, they had several children: José, Miguel, Isaac (my father), Victor Ángel, Gabriel, and perhaps Gloria and Luis or Julio (not sure of the name–both died in childhood).
