Tejedor

Post by Art »

This is a good example of technically well-done gaita playing, supposedly by a member of the band Tejedor:

It's a great demonstration of the capabilities of the gaita asturiana. I don't think the gallega can do much of that ornamentation. But I don't think I could take more than a few minutes of listening to this kind of showing off. I'd rather hear a melody.

--------------------

That's interesting. I've always wondered where the band's name came from. Is José Manuel Tejedor the gaita player?

The name of the group comes from the family name Tejedor. They are three siblings: José (bagpipes and flutes), Javi (accordion, bagpipes, and percussion), and Eva (vocals and percussion). José is one of the best gaiteros in Asturias, if not the best, but Javi also plays the bagpipes and has won a MacAllan trophy at the Lorient Inter-Celtic Festival.

Here the group Skanda plays the tune "Blood of Octobre." Skanda is a folk-rock group, one of the most interesting in Asturias today, playing a musical fusion of traditional Asturian, rock, reggae, swing, etc.

Watching Xuaco Amieva http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPq7XUVxlXA&NR=1 one can clearly see that the gaita is only blown into to replenish the air in the bag. Can't help but wonder how come nobody has improved the design by using a foot powered air pump instead....

Hey, Elí!

There are bellows-blown bagpipes, like the Irish "Uilleann pipes," the Czech "dudy" (also known in German as the "bock"), or the "Scottish smallpipes."

I'm not sure about this, but I'd guess that most of the bellow-blown pipes are quieter than the mouth-blown.

But those all use arm power. If a bagpipe were powered by foot, it'd be the cousin of the pump organ.

------------------------

Hello, Art. A while back I found this video of a bagpiping festival in Armagh (Ireland) in which Anxo Lorenzo performed with Lunasa. What I like about this medley is that they first play "Aires de Pontevedra", a Galician melody, and then the Asturian tune, "La Muñeira de Casu".
