We have to be very careful in assuming that persons who share a surname also share a common ancestor. In the case of patronyms like Fernandez, Perez and Martinez, common ancestry can never be assumed. The ending "ez" simply means "son of." There are many people named Fernando, Pedro and Martin whose given names became a way to distinguish their children from those of others. In short, the "ez" surnames have multiple origins (dozens or even hundreds of separate origins), and not all who share them are related.

In the case of the more rare surnames (such as Ovies or Verdin), the likeihood of a common ancestor is higher, but we still need to document the case to be sure.
