Those were the days!/ Qué tiempos aquéllos

Post by Terechu »

Nadie sabía dónde estábamos y no llevábamos teléfono móvil.
Nuestros actos a veces tenían consecuencias.

Children today are being pampered too much... If you were born after 1979 then you may want to exit, but if you grew up in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s then read on.

Looking back, it seems incredible how we could survive for so long.

We used to ride in the car without safety belts and airbags.
Our cradles were painted in bright colours with lead and cadmium-loaded paints
We could open medicine bottles without any problems
The doors and the cabinets were a constant threat to our fingers
We never wore a helmet when riding a bike.
We drank tap water, not bottled water.
We made soap-box cars and realized we had forgotten the brakes on the first down hill race. After a few accidents they were no longer required.
We went out to play in the morning and didn’t go back home until it got dark.
Nobody knew where we were and we had no cell phones.
We cut ourselves, broke our bones and busted our teeth and nobody got sued. They were accidents. It was nobody’s fault but your own.
We argued, fought and clobbered eachother regularly. Our life was like that and we lived with it, because grownups weren’t interested. What’s more, we were offered to get our ears boxed for taking a beating and coming home crying.
We ate bread and cookies with two inches of butter on them and never got fat.
We all drank from one bottle and nobody died from the sequels.
We had no Playstation, Nintendo 64, X-Box, videogames, 64 TV channels, DVD, Dolby Surround System, our own TV, computer, Internet chats.
We had friends.
We went outside and met with our friends without just like that. Or we simply went to their house and knocked on the door. Sometimes we didn’t even have to knock, we just walked in. Nobody took us there and nobody picked us up.
We made up games with sticks and stones and ate rainworms, and despite the prophecies neither did they live on in our stomachs forever after, nor did we poke out that many eyes with those sticks.
When we played football we only let the good ones play, the bad ones didn’t get to play and had to learn to put up with frustration.
Some students were not as smart as others. They flunked exams and had to repeat the course. That did not lead to dramatic meetings between our parents and teachers or to the modification of grades.
Our actions sometimes had consequences. We knew that and nobody could get away with anything. When you got yourself in a mess, you knew your parents were not going to get you out of it. On the contrary, they even held the same opinion as the teachers or even the cops.

Our generation produced a vast number of inventors and innovators, capable of solving problems and ready to run risks. We had freedom, failures, successes and responsibilities and we knew how to deal with it all. If you are one of us ...Congratulations!
