Alternatives ?

Post by ayalgueru »

A couple weeks ago the debate on the state of asturies was celebrated on our asturian parliament. President Areces defended his administration , nothing suprising there , we are doing fairly well , a new road here and there another hospital and so on ,,, his social subsidies and HOLD ON there the most important thing is that the level of public money transfered from Madrid hit an all time high

Increased dependancy and poverty of our land presented as an achievement

So according to his own accounts the best his administration has done.

- Taking money away from those who have earned to give it to those who they believe will return the favour by voting for him
- Begging an ever increasing amount of money from the rest of the spaniards

Fairly shocking indeed but not only that , the most striking thing comes when the so-called opposition makes their speach. Their only criticism is that the governement did not managed to get enough money transfered out of madrid , in other words , the conservative opposition overtaking the socialist government on the left , something not seen anywhere else on the western world I would imagine. Ideas on how to favour wealth creation , liberating forces of society and getting asturias back on its feet NONE at all.

Fairly dissapointing , my vote will not go to either of them surely.

-----------------

- Repartir limosna publica.
- Pedir perres a Madrid.

Ayalgueru, you're either very young or very pessimistic. Barely 20 years ago this region was so poor and neglected it was scary. In 1984 I registered my daughter at the Sotrondio elementary school and I swear it was in the same condition as when I used to go: the classroom floors were still of the same worn wood planks that were probably the original ones from before the Civil War.
Unemployment was 24%, there were no decent roads, no jobs, no pensions, no nothing.
Asturias is among the Communities with the highest education budgets. I believe there is a lot of goodwill, but no region can afford to lose 15.000 industry jobs in 15 years and come out of it unruffled.

muy mozu tampoco nun soy :P / I am not too young :P

I am not too young (31) and I am not pessimistic ! the reason I winge/moan/complain so much could well be an aquired british habit ( just kidding :P I love it here ) , I do believe things could be so much better so I am all for improving things and in general terms a positive and active attitude. Things could be better and even more it is not so difficult to spot what is wrong. On the other hand I know exactly what you mean the xixon I was born in was a fairly sinister, industrial and dirty city and now it all looks much better , without the shadow of a doubt the city and asturias is now a much more pleasant and nicer place to live , I will definitely give you that ... :)

What I meant to say is that we have big problems , for example out of my generation and in my particular group of friends (25-35 ) I would say that over 50% have been forced to move out of asturias to find jobs. That is a hell of a lot if you ask me ,,, I mean nothing wrong with that , I do believe myself that living in other lands meeting other people and all that is something that enriches you and hey ! my own personal experience is very positive at all levels but not everyone feels the same and is having a hard time.

Lack of jobs , dependancy and economic decline is a major problem for the asturias today. What I do find a bit dishartening is the fact that those political responsibles for the disaster find themselves trouble free with no effective opposition in front of them harly a quality democracy. As someone said ( ironically ) about the latest miners crisis "comrades the left is the employer and the right supports us what could be better let's strike "

greetings !

Once the heavy industry has been dismantled there is everything left to be done in Asturias. And it's you young adults who have to do it. It's useless for everybody to be engineers and lawyers and intend to work as such, because a region of 1 Million does not need 300 new engineers every year, plus zillions of other University graduates.
It is mostly those with University degrees that are leaving, at least in my family and circle of friends. The bakers, teachers, tehnicians, masons, butchers, waiters and owners of small businesses are all here. They certainly cannot allow themselves to vacation in Thailand or the Seychelles, but then again, one must be able to weigh up what type of lifestyle is more rewarding.

Has anyone ever made a serious attempt to establish high-tech industry in Asturias? From what little I know, it is at least as attractive a place to live as some areas in northern California, or in eastern Massachsetts near Boston, and has an annual outflow of well-educated young individuals who might well prefer to remain in situ.

Is there the equivalent of a mutual fund that invests in Asturias? If so, I and others might well be interested in it.

In my opinion, heavy industry in Asturias has the same dismal future as heavy industry in Niagara Falls (where my family lives, and where heavy industry once supported a thriving economy). The alternative is not the restoration of heavy industry with all of its ecological deficits, but the substitution of tourism, technological industries, etc. As for tourism, Tuscany and Provence are quite recognizable as a travel and gastronomic meccas by many Americans, but few have heard of Asturias or Asturian cuisine.

Bakers, teachers, masons, butchers, and waiters don't create wealth as much as they provide attractive living conditions for those who do, and thereby themselves share in the wealth.

I do not believe there are any specialist funds investing in the asturias , but I do not see why that would be impossible either at the end of the day the choice for retail investment is so wide this days , you even get ethical investment funds and other specialist ones. On the other hand the asturias is a small economy and the fund manager would be a bit hand-tied when chosing their investment ,, there are not that many asturian listed companies ,,,

Anyway I did send a mail passing your suggestion to cajastur (asturian savings bank) asking them if they have ever considered setting up one ? I will be surprise if I even get a reply but you never know ,, if there is enough demand ,,, !! ;)

----------
