Empanadas

Mafalda
I called my cousin Canton, Ohio (she would be the little girl to the left in the header photo) she told me that her husband's name was Bruno Lopez. She could not remember "La Zapatera's" first name, but said that her grandson, as well as a granddaughter, own property in Asturias - don't know in what town. She also said that she can remember that she had two daughters, Anita and Mary, who still live in Canton. Mary is 95 years old. I hope that is of some help to you.

By the way my wife had Empanada and Pote Asturiano for Luis , if you see him you could ask him if it was good, the Empanada was tuna fish.

Mafalda,

Hi Ron,

You are sending me into a feeding frenzy. At least I know what is going to be on my shopping list tomorrow.

HA  HA  HA  , But what foodies [Art: I'm not sure about "fartones"] you are!!! I love it, because this shows that you are ASTURIANOS without a doubt of any kind and that the genes that your great grandparents gave you are still alive and kicking, STRONG AND ROBUST. ¡Puxa Asturies!

Bob [Art: Actually, this should be Ron]: About the pote, did your wife make it according to my recipe? If so, I'd like to know if you liked it? :o

It's unlikely that we'll see Luis Argeo around here since he usually lives in Madrid. I keep up with his life more or less--as I do with a number of others of his generation--because they are friends of my kids and my nephews and nieces and because from time to time I bump into their parents or their uncles. I don't know if you know how it is in the villages in Asturias, but it's like a big family in which everyone knows everyone else. Nonetheless, I will ask my daughter to ask him the next time she sees him and I'll get back to you.

Hello Mafalda
The recipe for the pote is the one my grandmother (Aurora Arrojo Vasquez ) used , my mother ( Ida Vasquez Gonzalez ) used the same recipe. So now my wife Sandra is using the same recipe I guess you can call it a family recipe , all that I can tell you " its good ".

Hola Mafalda,

Art: “fartón” in Asturian is the person who likes to enjoy a good meal, enjoys eating, but, overall, likes all the ceremony that comes with the meal, good companion, tasty dishes, good chatting after, etc.

As many other words in Asturian, it is also used as pejorative, so we say that politician is a “fartón”, meaning an insult, when it is more focused in finding personnel satisfaction than in work for his/her voters; money for food and representation expenses are normally exhorbitant and you can find him/her more easilly around bars and restaurant than at the office.

But we also say it to our babies "¿tas fartuquin?" when we see them satisfied after eating, closing ther tiny eyes for a good siesta.

It is all about the tone you use speaking; obviously I said it whit all the love of the world; I am very fartona, as you can tell.

pote y empanada

Post by Mafalda »

-----------------
trans. Art & Leto

That's for sure, Ron, every family has its own way of cooking, with the recipes being passed down from the parents to the children, and every one brings their own preferences to the cooking. There's nothing that has more variations than a good "pote", starting with the main ingredient, which can be berzas [the typical Asturian green which is in the cabbage family], cabbage, or any other cabbage/col family green, squash, chestnuts....

By the way, is the dough for the empanada that you make a bread dough or a pastry dough? Do you bake it in your home or do you take it to the bread shop or pastry [cake/sweets/deserts] shop [to be baked]? Here there are many people who make the filling at home and then take it to be baked at the bread shop or pastry shop. I have never made an empanada in my life; I always buy them in the supermarket or the confectioner's shop.
[Art: Leto tells me that the last sentence begins with a negative statement with an implied "no/not": Yo en mi vida he hecho una empanada, siempre....]

Empanada

Post by Ron Gonzalez »

Hello Mafalda
My wife(Sandra) makes the filling, and the dough, then it is baked. All of this is done at home. Is the dough pastry or bread? That's hard to answer. All that I can say like the pote, "it's good". You could ask Art; he ate some of it! :?

Hola Mafalda:

Empanada

Hi Mafalda,
Sandra told me that it is a pastry dough: butter and eggs, no yeast.

Hola Mafalda:

Sorry it took me so long; I’m on holidays, but it seems like I have less time than when I’m working.

From what you say, Ron, it looks like the “empanada” you make is made of “hojaldre”; reverso translates as puff-pastry. For sure it is good, congratulations to Sandra, she might be an excellent cook; it sends me into a feeding frenzy too [Leto: that was a poetic licence from a previous post I translated from Bob; the translation of “poner los dientes largos” doesn’t make sense in English]

By the way, I understand that Luis said the “pote” was great  , the “empanada” and other things were very good, and that the Italians had stolen the recipe for the “bollos preñaos”.
