genealogy software -- software de la genealogía

Post by fjc »

I know that this question has been asked before and I'm sorry for asking it again, but can anyone give me a recommendation on genealogy software. The one I have is not satisfactory.

Thank You

What are you using now? What problems are you having with it?

I recently picked up a copy of Family Tree Legends nearly for free at CompUSA. It's not obvious how to work with Spanish surnames and it's not talked about in the user guide, but it's possible. Here's what you do:

While you are on that person's page, highlight the two surnames, and then right-click in the name box, and choose the option to make this the surname. That works well, but it is awkward. [Oops... look at what Elí says below.]

I've also tried the free version of Legacy Family Tree. I think in Legacy you enclose the last name between slashes:

María Elena /Menéndez Conde/

Both programs seem capable, but I haven't gotten very far with it yet.

------------------------------

Hmm I’m not familiar with that program (Family Tree Legends) but if it works like PAF then for María Elena /Menéndez Conde/ the program would assume that /Menéndez Conde/ is a new last name and on the males pass that on to the descendants. You would have to fix every single individual every single time, chances are you will miss something (if it works like PAF).

“El Anillo” has a good site of resouces of the sort http://www.elanillo.com/recursos.shtml of those maybe GDS would serve you best http://www.gdsystem.net/v5/es/

Ah, Elí's right. I hadn't gotten that far in adding that side of the family's data to the program. That's a disadvantage. I'll write a message to the company to see if we can get that fixed in a future upgrade of Family Tree Legends.

--------------------

This web page lists several programs it thinks handle Spanish surnames well:
http://www.cubagenweb.org/progs.htm
The reviewer recommends separate input fields for first and last names. But I doubt that these programs give children the right names. (See Elí's post).

Each of these are or will be available in free and paid versions
Personal Ancestral File (PAF) - versions 4 and 5:
http://www.familysearch.org/

Legacy Family Tree:
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com

GenDesigner (untested by the reviewer and it's still in Beta):
http://www.gendesigner.com/
It does not recommend Family Tree Maker because it's name field is limited to too few characters.

I have been having trouble with Family Tree Legends, so unless their tech support gets better and someone responds to my requests for help, I am not recommending it.

----------------

http://www.cubagenweb.org/progs.htm

Personal Ancestral File (PAF) - versiones 4 y 5:
http://www.familysearch.org/

Legacy Family Tree:
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com

http://www.gendesigner.com/
