Some History of Anmoore, West Virigina

Post by Ron Gonzalez »

Some history on Anmoore, West Virginia (Grasselli or Steelton) source: "History of Harrison County"

Originally known by several different names, Anmoore was settled in 1894 when Silas Ash bought 214 acres of land three miles east of Clarksburg, West Virigina. During the next decade Mr. Ash continued buying land adjoining his holdings.

In 1903 Ash sold 218 acres to Edward R. Davis and Lynn S. Hornor who divided the farm into building lots and established the unincorporated village named "Steelton" and then "Grasselli" after the Grasselli Chemical Company had established there in 1903. The plant was closed in 1927 and all operations were moved to Spelter.West Virigina.

In 1904 the National Carbon Company moved its new electrode factory to Anmoore to be near an abundant supply of cheap natural gas. The original plant included a pot calciner, equipment for crushing and mixing coal particles, a horizontal extrusion press, and pit-type baking furnaces. Taxes collected from the Carbon Plant help subsidize the town.

The carbon industry attracted settlers, so that on November 13, 1950 when Grasselli incorporated as "Anmoore" (for Ann Moore's Run), the name already used by the post office, the population already totaled 1,107.
