I've been thinking about Pepe's joke and the various responses to it.

Although this isn't my favorite kind of joke, I can see it's humor. Joke tellers probably find me a little boring because I tend to look at humor as content, as saying something about us and our world. That way of thinking probably started for me as a kid when some Polish friends told me Polish jokes and we talked about how they thought about them.

Words are powerful. One of my first awarenesses of this came when I realized that much of what I learned about religion came from singing hymns and anthems over and over. (The youth choir sang the same songs every year in my church.) In many cases I didn't like the words, but the ideas they communicated were exactly what I ended up "knowing" about my tradition!

Elí's concern and mine isn't political correctness. I get irritated with PC. PC behavior is largely unthinking and reactionary, even if it results from good intentions. Elí can easily explain his view and so can I.

I think PC also has an overly protective quality, as though the PC person could protect people. The "protected" would be better off naming their needs and reaching for them themselves.

My last comment is that I was disappointed to read the comment that Elí needs to "lighten up" or "chill out". That struck me as belittling. Elí's an adult, so I'll let him defend himself. My concern is that he impact of this kind of statement is to shut down conversation, which is contrary to the goals of a forum.

Whenever we publicly tell a joke or express our political views (and that's really the same thing), we can expect that others may react. It's threatening, but if we're not willing to deal with those reactions, we're not ready to go pubic. If you're not getting a reaction, you're probably not saying anything of import.

Personally I'm most stunned by those times when I don't realize that I'm saying something significant -- until others react. That's probably what happened with Pepe here. Yep. Been there!

--------------------

¡Sí, he estado allí! [¡Me lo ha ocurrido!]

Humor

Post by Mafalda »

Mafalda wrote: [trans. Art] They're nothing more than jokes, more or less funny, but JOKES.
Jokes wouldn't be funny if they didn't reflect reality or our perceptions of reality in some way. Many, many thinkers and researchers have written about the meaning of jokes and the social function of jokes. The average person doesn't recognize that jokes reflect deeper realities. That's true. But it doesn't mean that "they're just jokes".

Gracias

First of all, in Eli's FIRST reply he mentions something about me writing something about a SPANISH MAN. Can anyone out there show me where I wrote SPANISH MAN anywhere in the joke??? ANYWHERE???....
I'd like to know what Eli was reading, but it wasn't my joke.
And Art, for the record my "chillout" reply is not a attempt to stifle Eli, in fact, I sort of get a rise out of personalities like his. If anything his reaction was an attempt to stifle me. Another thing Eli, in your photo why do you hold that cross that way? This is not a vampire website......

This turned out to be an interesting thread. Great posts all!

Hey Bob just a quick comment on “you have far too much free time.”
"The only way to avoid being miserable is not to have enough
leisure to wonder whether you are happy or not."
--George Bernard Shaw

Pepe please don’t take what I said personally it was not meant in that manner, unless of course the author of the joke was you. My comment “ there is no such thing as a ‘Spanish’ man,” was directed towards the author of the joke, not the poster.

As for the photo... ha ha it’s not a ‘cross’ lol hadn’t occur to me that anybody would see it as such :-) I was at an old girlfriend's place in Erie, sometimes I just get to playing with whatever I may have on my hands, that time it just happened to be a paper towel. I bent and turned that thing a hundred times eventually I thought I had created a bird lol I was proudly ‘showing off’ my creation when she took that picture. I have to admit it doesn’t very much look like the Canadian goose I was trying to create but it certainly never occur to me that it could be seen as a vampire’s anything .... lol

Mafalda you are saying the same thing Art is, ‘jokes come in many shapes some are socially based, most of these have in their roots if not in reality at least on the perceptions people have’.

The problem with writing too much is that then you have to translate it... I need a Readers Digest version of myself. ;-)

[edited to add "I'd like to make Art's words my own"]

=====================
