Asturian St. Augustine (Florida)????

Post by JLP »

I was looking through the following article on Asturian family names in the Americas:

http://www.cs.brandeis.edu/~roser/pubs/rfa_names.pdf

In the article, I found a reference to Asturian sailor Pedro Menendez de Aviles, the founder of St. Augustine, Florida, and the first Spanish governor of Florida. The same paragraph also mentions that the settlement at St. Augustine, Florida, the first permanent European settlement in the United States, "had an explicitly Asturian original population."

I've heard of Pedro Menendez de Aviles and his Asturian origins. I had not heard that the original population of St. Augustine was majority Asturian. Has anyone else found any information on this on the internet?
