You're right, Ivo. The Taramundi penknife that I have is extremely sharp. I use it when I make the practice chanters for the gaita. It was a gift of Agustín, a forum member. (Thanks again, Agustín!)

Is

Recuerdo haberlas hecho hace muchos anos.

Is,
Is your family name Zardain? Is of basque origin? I was told that a big number of blacksmithis in the Oscos were of basque origin. I didnt know that they were also a few in Narcea'
BTW: There are some fantastic treeking routs in Oscos were you can see the old ferrerias. I remember myself doing them a few years back. All of them are derelicts.

Yes, Granda, the origin of the 3 original families that settled to work in the 'ferreirias' in County Ayande (Allande) in the 16th century were Basques from Navarre. In the case of our family name, Zardain, it could be a switch from an 'l' to an 'r', i.e., from 'Zaldain' to 'Zardain', which is a surname from Elizondo, in the Baztan Valley of Navarre. They too were blacksmiths until recently.

If you ask any one in Puela (Pola de Allande) they'll tell you that if you find any Zardains, they are sure to be 'ferreiros'. It's part of the local lore.
The Nison river valley is small, but there was enough water coming down from the Altu'l Palu for the blacksmiths to dam up the river and make canals. The canals are still used to irrigate 'praos' (to harvest the grass for cows) by way of 'sangradeiros', which are cuts in the pasture that help carry the water over the surface of the 'prau'.

I've been to Mazonovo in Santaya d'Ozcos, but have not been to Os Teixois near Taramunde. I'd love to spend some time there looking at the hydraulic system and the hammers. Maybe you could export the idea of Os Teixois and have it replicated in Dubai, a kind of mini-Asturias in the UAE...
