hola,

servus Is,

Peter, take a look at these two picture galleries by Miki Lopez, an Asturian photojournalist.

The first one is for County Bual (Boal, in Spanish) in the Navia River Valley of West Asturias. In one of the pics, you will see Marion Tiejmeyer, a German woman who decided to open a bed & breakfast about 2k out of town. My parents have stayed there and they say the place is beautiful, with horses for mountain outings.

In this other gallery, you´ll find a picture of Thomas Schmidt, who runs the bed & breakfast further up the river valley in Pezos (Pesoz, in Spanish). He´s a kayaker and takes people on kayak trips down the Agueira river and into Doiras dam. You can contact him through the website of ondabrava.com.

Actually, you can use Miki Lopez´gallery of photographs to see what the landscape is like in each of the 78 (I think) Asturian counties.

As for Internet access, if you´re on a bike and traveling around, you´ll have to rely on cybercafes or on town hall internet services, which can be erratic. Gruesse!

Hola a todos:

Por cierto Is.

Domingos y festivos cerrado.

Is,

i just looked at those pictures. lovely. thanks. i will write down the names you gave me. do you know them both personally?

btw: what "other" gallery are you referring to? you posted two identical URLs. accident?

in regards to internet-access: yes, i guessed that it will be a pain while i am still on the road. i probably get first a cell-phone, until i find a place. and then get a land-line. i was wondering how wide-spread & expensive internet-service is over there. do people use dial-up?, dsl? ...cable?? ... satellite??? well, if service costs a ton i might have to live without the (a?) net.... wait! is there such a thinkg? a life without internet? mio dio.

danke & servus, bis denn, peter

ps: i will try to lift that from english into spanish. i need to practice anyhow. { not easy to grow another language {{synapses}} in your head at 46, well, ok, at least not this one here }

forgot to ask: how would you describe the main differences between the west and the east of asturias? cheers

hola

Hallo, Peter. Yes, it was an accidental cut & paste. Here is the correct link to the picture gallery by Miki Lopez in County Pezos (Pesoz):

http://mas.lne.es/asturias/indice.php?c=6

The German kayaker who runs the bed & breakfast there is in the 3rd-to-last group of pictures with red kayaks in the background. You can reach him, like I said previously, via ondabrava.com. Because there are not too many German speakers in that part of Asturias, I´m sure he´d be happy to chat with you. And if you do ride up there on your bike, it´s quite a shlep, but once you get there you can read all the back issues of Der Spiegel you ever dreamed of. Thomas has them stacked up agains the windows...

About internet access, it is indeed difficult. But once you´re settled down, the going price for a DSL line is about 29 euros per month.

The price for internet access via cable modem here in New England is about $50 a month. Not cheap but not unaffordable. Probably about the same as in Asturias. And what was once a luxury had rapidly become a near necessity. DSL may be slightly less, but for somewhat slower service.

Sometimes I long for the cheap text-based (and about as fast as current graphic-rich access) internet access of 20 years ago.

Ach die Bajuwaren, Ihr seid ja was.

You could translate 'Bastler' into Castilian Spanish as 'manitas'. The opposite, someone who tinkers and destroys at the same time is called a 'manazas'. Apparently, you are a 'manitas', Tierradenaide, and that is quite admirable.
