hola,

----

Welcome to the forum, Peter! And thanks for introducing yourself. Can you translate your post into English so that half of the forum understands? I'd also be interested in finding out why you decided to look for a fixer-upper all the way in Asturias. We can give you a few tips here, I'm sure. By the way, each member will try to lure you to his or her county, but that's the way it goes in Asturias. A pair of madrenes (wooden clogs) will do you some good.

----

thank you Si. yes, cheers, any feedback is appreciated. and sure, i can translate the intro back from spanish into english, laugh, back to square one.

what kind of shelter? small, old, run-down. i want to work with what is there. restore as much as possible. but with very basic solutions, except, i would like to see if i can set-up, very low-key, some means of alternative energy rendering. and then there is water. i have no idea what, if any, place i will find. i might have to dig my own well, if this is possible at all.... you see, all those details will have to be addressed and worked out once they 'materialize' { "to cross the bridge once you get there" }.

i will come next spring, set up some base-camp, and from there start riding around on the bike and see whats out there. pieces always fall into place, some&how.

so long, peter

p.s. that thinkg with the madrenes is alright. my sister lives on an old farm in holland and has a few of them flying about. and at worst i will carve my own pair. i always maintained that a hachet was my favorite tool ... well, especially here in the big apple, people who know me from work { construction } regard that as nuts. tough luck.

* * *

* * *

here you go:

hi,

if you would have told me this spring that i would now sit here and try to write somethinkg in spanish: i would have said you are nuts. well, life is weird.

so what happend? after having lived almost 20 years here in nyc i decided: its time for a new metamorphosis. one month before the berlin wall came down i came here from germany, where i was born 25 years prior. i figure: as long as i have some fuel in the tank and am still crazy enough to do so: i should do it all over again. another language, another setting, another climate, another culture ... another way to live.

when i was 16 i started an apprentice-ship as electrician. then i went back to evening-school. and, finally, i ended up as a journalist. after 6 years of writing i was burnt-out. i wanted a break. thusly i decide to go to nyc for half a year. well, i got stock here. the rest is history, as they say. i actually ended up going back to my original craft: construction, interiors. thats what i have been doing for most of the past 20 years: making a living as a small-time contractor.

now i have enough of a metropolis. i want to live in the hinterland now, so that i can step out of the door without, at once, every single time having to be worried about being hit by some car etc. i want to come to asturias next spring, find a basic shelter & then start cycling around and look for some small piece of land and an old small house or cottage etc. whatever i will find i will fix up, then grow some food, experiment with alternative energy means for the house, read books, go biking, go running, learn spanish, bake homemade sourdough bread, go hiking, shovel snow {??}.... god, i cannot wait to start 'hitting' dirt instead of cement-sidewalks.

it is good to have come across this forum here. seems like a lively and healthy place. i will dig around a bit more and than maybe i start posting some. i like words. they are somehow like food.

well, thats my 'story', cheers, peter

That's a great story, Tierradenadie. And I'm sure more than one of us is jealous about your project. There are quite a few tips that I would give you in order to smoothen your undertaking, but I think you should keep asking questions so that we can address your concerns directly instead of rambling (which is my associational tendency).

First off, if you come in the spring, it will be rainy. In general, weather is highly unpredictable in Asturias. As my father says, the first thing one did out in the countryside back in the old days before leaving the farm was to open the door to see if it was raining. You'd stick your black umbrella out the door and if it got wet, it was proof that you would need a certain type of clothing.

So if you're on a bike, there will definitely be miserable days. My other general recommendation would be to avoid the big roads going east-west in Asturias. I feel sad for the Santiago pilgrims whenever I spot them walking on the shoulder of roads near Llanes in eastern Asturias. They have no choice because they don't know the place, but that's why you should ask people here about your itinerary.

My family is from West Asturias, so I am not objective about recommending places. My tendency, whenever I am home, is to go west. Once I cross the Nalon River on the coastal roads and head for L.luarca (Luarca) and start seeing the first slate-roofed farmsteads, there is no going wrong. For me, it is the most beautiful and authentic part of Asturias. It is also the least-known area and definitely wild.

As for the renewable energy, are you thinking of solar-thermal or PV? PV is very expensive and Asturias is not so exposed. But solar-thermal makes sense. Digging a well? You don't need to--water is abundant. My uncle gets it for free from a neighbor's prau.

Keep asking and we'll respond. I'll try to translate your posts into Asturian too.

Hola,

"great story ..."

Saltare y ver cómo mantenerse a flote.

Voy a comprobar todas posibilidades. Tendré mucho tiempo y nada "mejor" a hacer. Así, mientras mis piernas me permiten, voy a ir alrededor.

"free water"

"renewables":
Estoy abierta a cualquier cosa.

"translation":

Servus, peter

~ ~ ~

"great story..."
I don't know, XX, i don't know. But, surely, I will find out. yes, it all sounds a bit too nice, too 'romatic'. but I don't fool myself. I am in for some serious culture-shock. after living for 20 years in nyc > life in asturias will be a whole nother ball-game/league. but that restlessness, that being driven is what keep the humanimal 'alive', no?

"spring, rain":
what? I thought all the rain happens in winter. does it ever stop raining there? no, it is ok. It will be a rough landing/start no matter what. there is never a perfect time, perfect timing. I will just jump in and see how to stay afloat. and then, hopefully, will learn how to swim in asturias. once I find a temporary roof over my head I will be ok. with a base-camp set up I will start 'serious' expeditions on the bike.

"west asturias":
"wild" ... i am on my way! don't worry about objectivity. no such thing. your description sounds lovely { what is the downside, smile }. I will check it all out. I will have plenty of time and nothing "better" to do. so, as long as my legs permit, I will go/bike around.

"free water"
what? and I thought the only thing left in life one can get for free is, maybe, air. well, must be all that rain you mentioned. and: I read spain has a 'few' problems with water. so, frankly, I will rather drown in rain then shrivel in a drought. { I will have to look up "prau" .... god, there is so much to look up, to look into, to look at ... beautiful}

"renewables":
I am openminded to anything. and yes, you are right, that stuff can be expensive. but I always liked "lego", that means, I will start small & basic and keep adding {modules, pieces}, and see how it all goes, and where it goes. I started a while back a little research on the internet. and there quite a few 'bizzare" things out there. I might post some links or photos later. and maybe somebody in this forum here has concret expriences yet with using renewables in asturias for small houses.

"keep asking":
questions are something, it seems, I will not run out of anytime soon. must be my past as a journalist.

"translating":
much appreciated. it would probably take me 5 months what you can do in 5 minutes.

thanks so much again, and any questions and tips etc are indeed welcome.

Welcome, Peter!

For energy, I wonder if water power might work in western Asturias. As Paul/Is can tell you, there were a lot of metalworkers in that region and they used water power.

The downside might be that the rugged landscape makes travel more difficult Also, there aren't many jobs, which is why a lot of young people have moved to the larger cities in central Asturias. But there are some very pretty and reasonably priced homes and land. There is also a movement of artsy squatters in the area, from what a few have told me. They sound a lot like our 1960s hippie "back-to-the-landers."

Paul is right that many of us are going to be jealous if you succeed! But we're going to want to hear all about it!

It's worth noting that the language used is different in different areas of Asturias. To really fit in in western Asturias, you'll want to learn their language, which Paul can describe better than I can.

------------------------------

¡Bienvenido, Peter!

interesante. yo no esperaba.

peter

Yes, I've seen huge wood piles in the small villages, so I'm sure there are still many people heating with wood.

As for the squatters (okupas?) I've not seen them on-site, but in some areas of the countryside a high percentage of the population has left, so it would probably be easy to be a squatter at least in the short term. (I'm not recommending this!)

-----------------------

Hola Ana,

In Connecticut we heat with oil, but we also have a wood-burning fireplace that we use more for fun than for heat. It will heat the living room, but it creates a draft that draws heat out of the rest of the house. Still, there is nothing better on a snowy evening with a howling wind outside than to sit near the fireplace (our four cats like to be closer to it than we do). Sometimes I grill steaks or lamb over the hot coals and we eat in the living room.

In Massachusetts, our heat is electric, solar (windows and skylights), and also comes from our downstairs neighbors (we are on the third and fourth floors and heat rises). As a result it costs us very little.

We usually buy mixed species firewood. What kind is most often used in Asturias? Oak, eucalyptus (which should burn hot with its high oil content), beech? Almost no one here uses pine or other conifer because they deposit too much pitch in the chimney. Does anyone there use a coppice system to replenish the supply of firewood?

Well, I´m presently down in Asturias and it has been raining non-stop for 3 days already. The sea is also pretty rough. I don´t have internet access here, so I won´t be able to contribute much to this thread other than explain to Peter what I meant with sourcing water from a prau.

Prau is Asturian for prado, or pasture/field. My uncle has a log cabin up in the mountains and gets his water from a neighbor´s source. Basically, he runs pipes up to where the water bubbles out of the mountain and that´s it. The only problem, obviously, is when there are dry spells.

I´ll send you 2 addresses of fellow Germans in West Asturias so you can ask them directly and perhaps meet them when you come. Both of them have restored farmhouses or old houses and run country inns.

http://www.wordreference.com/es/en/tran ... spen=okupa
