I believe the best would be a bank with branch offices in NYC and also the town where you will be going, i.e. Banco Santander, BBVA...there's also a subsidiary of Deutsche Bank in Gijón. In rural areas the best are the Savings & Loans (Cajastur).

Whatever bank you choose, please be aware of the American IRS reporting requirements for fund transfers and tax liability. If you move funds "off-shore" you are not necessarily immune from IRS taxes, and any large transfer (i.e., over $10,000) will be reported - almost immediately - to the IRS. I have no idea what the legalities or tax consequences may be on the Spanish end of things, but consulting an attorney in the US and one in Spain would not be a bad idea.

I haven't looked at the law in ages, but if I remember correctly it wasn't a matter of being taxed but simply a requirement to report large transfers (as Bob indicated). I always assumed that the government wants this reporting so it has a legal case in the event of money laundering or other criminal activity (because most of that money would not be reported, so they would have an easy way to haul you into court). If anyone knows differently, I'd be interested in learning about it.

But in the 1980s I think there were low limits on how much money a person could remove from Spain, so you may want to investigate that, Tierradenadie. The law has probably changed, but you don't want to take money to Spain that you won't be able to take out of the country later.

-----------------------------

Luckily you can leave that all behind when you get to Asturias. In many places, it takes hours before you hear a car (when they do, they will roar by--so don't let your guard down while biking). NYC is tough on bikers, although it is so much faster than the clunky subway system, right? Anyway, Gute Besserung!

Good! It sounds ike you've come back quite well.

Yeah, the pace of life is a lot slower in some of those small towns. I'd bet that it gets faster the closer you are to Oviedo, Gijón, and Avilés.

---------------------------------

It sucks, Tierradenadie! No other word for it. Despite the craze about the Velib and the bike paths, I rather walk in this city than use my bike. In fact, I'd say NYC is better on bikers than Paris, largely as a result of the work of Transportation Alternatives.

In general, mass transit in Paris is comparable to the sardine cans on the IRT. I imported my bike (Surly Cross-Check) from Washington DC and have not been able to use it. Why? Because I get faster from A to B on foot. I'm now thinking of re-importing the bike to Asturias where I can really use it to get around.

Remember, though, in Asturias the hazard is 18-year-olds in sports cars. I know a few who drive from Bual up to Grandas/Salime in 20 minutes, whereas I would take 45 minutes. There are reckless drivers there too, so bitte aufpassen!

p.s. ¿no montas en bici en asturais? ¿tienes un caballo allá?
