Post by Charolette »

I need to write some letters to people who speak only spanish. I want to write in a way that will translate and make sense. Can anyone give me some guidelines?
Thank You

I think it helps to keep your sentences simple and short. Organize your thoughts carefully. All of that will remove a lot of potential confusion.

You might also try beginning by giving your English version to http://translate.google.com to see what vocabulary and expressions it suggests. Its suggestion usually has lots of mistakes, so you can't just send it.

If I don't know an expression that Google suggests, I look it up in a dictionary before using it. Sometimes Google teaches me things, but I never trust it without checking (in this case it suggested "controlar" for "checking", which I don't think fits).

If you're writing to Spain, you'll probably want to avoid the usted forms, which Google will insert.

I usually rely on my "ear" to tell me if something sounds natural. I don't know how good my ear is, but I think our ear develops as a result of reading a lot of Spanish.

Use a spellchecker! It helps a lot.

Often my readers give me help... thanks!

Muchas veces mis lectures me dan ayuda,,, ¡gracias!
