una tortilla de patatas

Post by Joniwrite1 »

My grandfather, Santiago Diaz, loved to tell me about his trip sailing on an old Clipper Ship around the horn to Los Angeles, CA. He worked for his passage and little more.

On arriving at the port of Long Beach, CA he received his pay, grabbed his one bag and stumbled down the wharf on his sea legs. The first thing he saw was a restaurant and he decided to try "American food". The waiter took his order of one tortilla and asked if that would be all. "Of course" relied grandpa, and he waited for what he thought would be "una tortilla de patatas" of his boyhood days in Riosa. When the waiter returned with a Mexican flour tortilla he was embarresed to reorder!

He later told me it was the first dish my grandmother prepared for him after they wed. I'll include the recipe in the food section.
