Arnao Museo

Post by Lisabel »

Gracias

Welcome, Lisabel! We'll look forward to hearing more about the museum.

The Asturians who left the Arnao area, worked in many different zinc plants and other heavy industries. A number went to West Virginia, but there many also worked in other states, including Pennsylvania, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, New York, and Ohio. Perhaps Suronda can tell us if there were more in WV than the other states. One interesting detail is that many Asturian emigrants moved around the country, working in different states, often still in the zinc industry.

Also, please note that West Virginia and Virginia are two different states, but they are neighbors, located next to each other.

¡Bienvenida, Lisabel!

Post by Bob »

My own grandparent came to the EEUU in 1913. They went first to Cherryville, Kansas, then East St Louis, and finally Spelter. There were enough Asturianos and other Spaniards in West Virginia that the Spanish government established a consulate in Clarksburg, staffed by and sharing the same space with the people of the Italian consulate. The name of the consul escapes me at the moment, as does the street address. I'll try to find them in my notes.

Thank you very much for your answers!

I´m afraid that my English is not the best, so I´m going to write you in Spanish.

[discovery of the coal deposits at Arnao and first artisanal mining activity]

[the colliery was born in 1833 with the RCAM. The activity focused on mining coal. In this period, all the necessary installations and infrastructure were developed for the functioning of the mine: forges, workshops, rails, wharf... The colliery already starts to stand out for its use of technical means, which were unknown at that time in Spain ]

[the RCAM reforms its partnership and widens activity towards the manufacture of zinc, for which it installs a factory just over four kilometres from the colliery. The coal from the mine will now serve as fuel for the industrial installations]

[Sea water begins to seep into the galleries, causing floods inside the mine. The difficulties in mining the coal lead to the closure of the colliery in 1915]

[During the mining period, between 1833 and 1853, no space planning existed, with different uses coexisting in the same area. From 1858, with the creation of the zinc factory and the arrival of foreign personnel to which housing had to be made available, the company’s social policy shifted. The occupation and use of the territory began. Whether or not combined, three types of spaces can be identified, based in the activity for which they were developed: the production space, residential space and public facilities.

The social policy of the company is based on a system of social and working relations known as industrial paternalism, by means of which the authoritarian company looks after the well-being of its employees while excluding their participation. This policy of social administration results in a strict control of territorial organisation].

What I'm looking for, and the reason I posted in this forum, is information on immigrants to the U.S., because in my opinion they are part of history. In this sense I am looking for stories, for example: the trip to Virginia, how long it lasted, how much it cost, where they arrived, the kind of employment they found, how many families traveled to the US, where they settled, how the next generation settled in to the culture, any ties to Arnao. Also, photographs, memories of any other kind, any kind of story ...
