denunciations of Isis

Post by Bob »

Muslims are no more a monolithic group than are Christians or Jews; there is considerable diversity within all three Abrahamic religious traditions. The real problem, it seems to me, lies in individuals and groups who think their own beliefs are somehow ordained by God.

Thanks, Bob, for providing Robert with articles about Muslim leaders who have denounced the extremist ideology and the tactics. Robert, are you able to accept that as sufficient evidence?

Robert, I am uncomfortable with appears to me as lumping of together of all Muslims in one box. Because we aren't conversing face-to-face, or even with the benefit of sound, it's hard to understand your tone and intention.

Are you aware that in the U.S. there are radical extremists who hate Muslims and have planned to murder Muslims or attempted to murder them? Not surprisingly, some of these people have actually murdered non-Muslims, who they incorrectly assumed to be Muslim. Even more Americans people have no shame for calling our president a "Muslim," as if that's an acceptable criticism. Are you concerned about these extremists?

I've been thinking about "How magic conquered *political* culture" after reading this interesting perspective on fantasy in popular culture.

If fantasy is a response to turbulent times and is a symptom of discomfort with rapid change, then maybe that explains why we also have more "fantasy" in our political life.

Obviously, a multitude of extremisms are in vogue in the U.S. and around the world. Many of these extremists, who are screaming and hating so harshly, appear to exist in a fantasy world. In other words, they aren't concerned with basing their "reality" on verifiable facts.

Perhaps each of these forms of extremism is a rejection of our post-modern reality and a rejection of anyone who is the least different.

How can we resolve our differences politically if we're living in these fantasies? Maybe that's why we have so many armed conflicts. Rather than pointing fingers at others, each of us must ask how we have been deluding ourselves.
