Canciones sobre la emigración - Songs about emigration

Post by Indalecio Fernandez »

"Llevaime a mio casa,
hechaime nel catre, abrir les ventanes
que entre el orpín
y cuandu tea muertu,
debaxo del horreo,
cavai un furacu
y enterraime allí.
Y a la xente moza
voi day un conseyu
pa que nun yos pase
lo mesmu que a mí:
Que xunten les manes
e na mesma xera
si quieren ser llibres
dientro'l so país".

For a forum on migration, and given that this is a subforum for the Asturian Songbook, it seems appropriate to share some of the songs that are devoted to Asturian emigration.

The first is Hector Braga, with the theme "The Emigrant" a variety of Asturian tonada. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kj74qyijmUs

Another is Xuan Asturian Martino with a tune entitled "The Asturian emigrant" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxI4_e5-cA0

The folk group Pola de Lena, making a modern song entitled "L'Emigrant" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Wh62TpEBuY

Asturian song sung by Maritere González of the Choir Cima de Parres, entitled "The bells in my village" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTBLDofVHUc

Rubiera Carlos sings "The Captain" about someone forced to emigrate: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C41yH7YAELA

From the same author, I write the lyrics of a song for which I cannot remember the title or find on the net, but I still remember from my teenage years. Asturian purists will have to forgive me. I write from memory and without looking at the rules of the "Academia of the Asturian Language."
Anuechi nun suañu
paeciome sentir
"Llevaime a mio casa,
hechaime nel catre, abrir les ventanes
que entre el orpín
y cuandu tea muertu,
debaxo del horreo,
cavai un furacu
y enterraime allí.
Y a la xente moza
voi day un conseyu
pa que nun yos pase
lo mesmu que a mí:
Que xunten les manes
e na mesma xera
si quieren ser llibres
dientro'l so país".
This is just a sample of the feelings of those who for one reason or another had to leave Asturias. I hope you like it.

¡Gracias, Indalecio!

Thanks, Indalecio! I doubt that those of us in the US are aware of the importance of emigration in Asturian culture. There is much more feeling there about this topic than we Americans can imagine. That's because there was -- and continues to be -- so many Asturians pouring out of Asturias for a better life, although they will never find another place as beautiful or another people as warm and generous. Here is a recent example of someone preparing to leave:

-----------
Here are the lyrics to "La Capitana" by Carlos Rubiera.

tengo llevate a ti".

Cuandu la guerra
tuvo n´Habana
de cañoneru sirviendo al rey,
y anduvo en tratos co la metralla
y una cubana de Camagüey.

Cuandu-y dixeron
una mañana
que ya firmaben la rendición,
foi despidise de la mulata
con un abrazu y la so canción.

"Si torno a la mar
ye pa ser capitán
que nun ye vida
esta de mariñan,
y escuchame bien
lo que te voy dicir
de capitana
tengo llevate a ti".

Otras letras de Carlos Rubiera - Some other lyrics from Carlos Rubiera:

"EL NIVEL DE BOB DYLAN ES PALMARIAMENTE INFERIOR AL MÍO"

"THE QUALITY LEVEL OF BOB DYLAN IS CLEARLY WORSE THAN MINE"

"DE TODO EL REPERTORIO DE LOS BEATLES NO QUEDARÍAN, CON EL TIEMPO, MÁS QUE DOS O TRES CANCIONES, MIENTRAS QUE MIS DISCOS ASPIRAN A RESULTAR IMPERECEDEROS"

"OF THE ENTIRE REPERTOIRE OF THE BEATLES THEY WILL NOT SURVIVE, OVER TIME, MORE THAN TWO OR THREE SONGS, WHEREAS MY DISCS ASPIRE TO BE IMPERISHABLE"

Here's another perspective on Asturian emigration, from the political left. (I'm not promoting this particular political group.)

¡Gracias, Indalecio!

Thanks, Indalecio! I like the vocals on that but found the pianist got in the way of being able to hear Julio. Here's a much earlier version in a different style. I'd love to hear the newer version with just the guitar and voice.

Here's another striking version by the Miners' Choir of Turon.
